Local Snorkeling in the Andaman Sea

Krabi is a southern province on Thailand's pristine Andaman, with wonderful neighbouring islands such as the famous islands Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lanta and Bamboo Island.

The Krabi Archipelago is undoubtedly one of the most stunning landscapes in Thailand and forms part of the Had Noppart Marine National Park.

In Ao Nang Bay many large outcrops tower high from the water to form a series of monoliths. The amazing rock formations are home to a multitude of tropical fish of all sizes, shapes and colours, with frequent sightings of parrotfish, butterfly fish, seastars, giant sea clams, turtles, leopard sharks and even black tip reef sharks. The Andaman Sea is plankton rich, attracting a multitude of reef fish.

We visit the best local snorkeling sites in the area including, the rich coral formations of Bamboo Island, to the west lies the inhabitated island of Koh Lanta boasting picture perfect white sandy beaches. To the south of Krabi experience the coloured reefs of the well know Phi Phi Islands. Here you can find peaceful and romantic beaches with exotic rock formations making up the two islands.

The visibility averages around 20m to a maximum of 30m+ in the high season (November - April). However the sea temperature is a very warm 29/30°C all year round.

Snorkeling in the green season, (May - October) is also great. The islands are relatively quite making this a truly relaxing experience.

We can offer you a great variation of specialised snorkeling tours that will add another dimension to your holiday spent in the wonderful Krabi Archipelago all available right on the "doorstep" just a short boat ride away.

Yep, I've also done the snorkeling tour out of Krabi and had a fabulous day for a very reasonable price.

The thing that makes the day is the weather, if you crack a really nice day like we did its brilliant but if the weather is shite the day is shite.

In the lap of the weather gods really.

Just talking with the wife about Krabi. Snorkeling would certainly be a priority.

    Great information and good thread.

Recently spent a long weekend in Krabi/Ao Nang and took the wife on a day snorkeling trip. There are many places along the beach road in Ao Nang promoting snorkel trips and their prices all vary, even though it's the same basic itinerary. I found the cheapest place was the lady at the booth at the entrance to the Best Western on beach road. I think it was 350 baht/person.

Unfortunately, it wasn't like the last time I was there, but that was about 10-11 years ago. Back then, you just talk to the guys with their long tail boats and agree on a price. I think it was 1,000 baht for the whole day and the guy would take us anywhere we wanted to go.

Nowadays, it's all organized. A driver picks you up at your hotel and drops you off near a state park / beach. All the different boats are there and you are directed onto your respective boat. Ours held a good 30-40 people. There are lifejackets for everyone.

You then get underway and head out to your first destination, just like all the other boats. So that means it's going to be busy and crowded with long tail boats and speed boats. At that destination, you play in the water a little.

40-50 minutes later, you get underway to your nest destination. The crew hands out snorkel gear and you drop anchor. The water is 5 meters deep. This was a problem for me and my wife. I thought we were going to be on a beach and be able to walk out from the beach to snorkel. I busted my left shoulder, in a motorcycle accident 5 years ago, so I have limited range of motion. So I would have trouble trying to pull myself back up out of the water. And my wife can't swim, so I wouldn't be able to help her stay afloat. So we ended up just sitting in the boat. I was really po'd as that was what I really wanted to do while in Krabi.

You then depart for another island where the "buffet" lunch is served. This island is very close to the infamous "James Bond Island". The buffet lunch was just boxes of rice with a fried egg and some kind of vegetables. I didn't care for it. There was a some time for swimming on that island. They also have a small bar selling ice cold drinks, including beer. We were there for about an hour.

We then went to another beach that has some hotel sharing the beach. At the end of the beach there are two temples in shallow caves. One of them has all these wooden penises, which was...interesting (especially when the ladies pose with them). We were there for about an hour.

For the price, it wasn't bad. I just wish I could have gone snorkeling, but I need a beach to wade out from. The weather was good. We left at about 8 AM and were back around 4 pm.

If we go back, I think we would do it again.

    Steve

PS: Maybe I'll add some pics to this later.

Yeah that was pretty much how it was in January when the wife and I did the National Marine Park from Koh Samui. All those great islands and reefs and everyone winds up in one tiny area. The Thai Tourism Authority really needs to rethink how they setup these types of operations.

    Good info Steve.

    Thanks.

Ive got a picture thread some where about the day snorkeling trip out of Ao-Nang.

Granted one must bunk in with all the other punters but its just the way it is. Other option is to hire your own private tour.

If there's 4 of you it could work out OK.

Anyway, if the weather is good its a brilliant day, if the weather is shit its foked.

End off. We cracked brilliant weather and had a real nice day out.
