Thread: condition of Thai coral reefs

viewed a show the other evening about the condition of the oceans & coral reefs around the world.
From the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Barrier Reef pollution is damaging this resource.
local pollution & agricultural run off are responsible for the coral degradation.
Fertilizer is a big issue .. Huge 'dead zone' at the mouth of the Mississippi due to agricultural run off.

what are the reefs like in the andaman sea? Is any of Thailand actually on the andaman sea?
straits of malaca? would include Krabi & perhaps Phi Phi.
Gulf of Thailand?
I have always avoided Pattaya's water & never been to Samui.

Phuket's water seems to be rather clean, but I doubt one can see excess potassium.

I'd hate to see an analysis of the Chao Praya's water .. I do not eat prawns in Bkk because of the prawn farms in the Chao Praya's flood plain.

erm, u saying u R thai? and drive a tuk tuk or just being all symbolic like?

Most of the areas I have snorkelled around Thailand have been disappointing, due to coral damage or poor visibility

however, if you get well away from pollution, like the Andaman dive areas, it can be good

The Strait of Malacca is a narrow, 805 km (500 mile) stretch of water between Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) and the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

so they aint on Thailand anyway ....

both maps show the strait to extend past the northern end of sumatra.

ok cartographers, where does the strait end? latitude.

Just a follow up to this thread.

Thailand was hammered in the Nineties with global warming, cyclone Gay in the Gulf, coral bleaching, dynamite fishing , over fishing, dive boats dropping anchors on coral, the Coral never had a chance. Its was a disaster.

Then after things picked up a tad the tsunami roared over the Andaman destroying a shit load .

Anyway,

I'm very pleased to report that the Coral around Koh Tao has made a spectacular come back over the last decade and there are some extensive gardens of stag coral .

Also a large variety of fish life to be had.

Go check it out, great place to take your kids as well.

Was up in the Similans earlier this year Terry. Can happily report that what I saw there and at Richeliu Rock looked pretty healthy.

Could have something with the area being a national park though.

National park? Like that ever meant anything in Thailand apart from charging a fee for entering.
Koh Samet? Koh Pipi? They are "national parks" too and about to sink into the ocean by the sheer weight of all the bungalow operations and their guests.

I was at the Similan in december last year on a 3 days liveaboard.
I found that coral bleeching was massive and alarming.
And the number of tourists (like myself) going there were off the scale.

Sail Rock Island (no. 8) was rat infested like you wouldn`t believe it, unless you were so unfortunate to have to spend a night there among heaps of russians who seemed to be the only guests bold enough to spend a night here.
Entire camp area stank of piss and it was generally a health risk to spend any amount of time here.

I saw diving boat flushing their septic tank right on the diving sites, my own vessel included.

Water visibility was good, though, and the marine biodiversity fair, albeit in small numbers compared to what I have seen elsewhere.

im of to phi phi island next month, I've been on a bit of a diet though, Hope my bungalow can handle it.
