    If you have ever tried to keep coral in a reef tank you would know how sensitive they can be to water quality. They don't like nitrates at all which sadly is exactly what fertilizer is. Add to that the acidification of the worlds oceans and I see a day very soon where coral will be mostly extinct.

    "mostly" is a good hedge for your paragraph of doom

    Coral will survive where there is a financial driver... could be tourism in some places; could be more indirect in others, like corporate social responsibility initiatives from multinationals with an interest in good PR or aid budgets associated with international environmental treaties.

    Marine nitrate sensors are coming along nicely, it's realistic to imagine coral health sensor observatories comprising an array of different sensors being developed and deployed for trials over the next few years.
