Went out for lunch today, masakan Padang which translates to food from Padang city (in South Sumatra). Lots of migrants from Sumatra ended up in Jakarta and so masakan Padang stalls are ubiquitous. Today was slightly smoggy.
but the traffic wasn’t too bad as it only took us 30 minutes to get there. (As opposed to yesterday when Mrs KW went out for lunch and got stuck for 2.5 hours)
This restaurant name translates to Morning to Afternoon. So I guess that means they don’t do dinner.
The thing about masakan Padang restaurants is that they serve you dozens of dishes and you only pay for what you eat. (So no sampling).
here is a set up of their most common plates.
It included brain, but no I didn’t.
prawns yes.
Beef with chili yes.
fish ok
^ My mum often tells me about eating sheep's brains spread on toast during the war. I've never tried it to my knowledge but wouldn't turn it down if offered.
Try getting sheep's brains at a butcher around here these days, it's hard enough to find tripe and offal.
In fact, try finding brains anywhere in the UK, especially oop norf.
^ Well, put it this way.... I saved a few quid not needing a return flight for the wife.
Havent been to Indo for quite a few years and when I did go, only on business. How do you find the average Indo Willy? I remember being there not long after the earth quake after Australia donated a billion dollars and sent the Naval supply ship to help with basic supplies of food and water. I remembered being told by a couple of qualified engineers that the Australian supply ship anchored off the coast of Aceh was really a spy ship really there not to help but to gather information for the Americans. The mind set and ignorance from supposedly educated people astounded me, but then again they do believe in an illiterate child rapist who spent his spare time murdering the very people who took him in. I would like to think they have moved on from then but I notice they are still burning churches.

Wow
Are we talking about the soekarno years?
I can sort of understand the Indonesian paranoia against Australia after they found out that the lnp Aussie govt under the cross-dressing Alexander downer who was foreign affairs minister at the time bugged the timorese embassy thus fucking over the timorese for gas concessions
Bless, reading every word.
The reality is that some things have changed and some have stayed the same. The pollution, traffic, chaos is still there. Kemang a happening expat spot back in the day has died, bars and restaurants boarded up, graffiti and weeds taking over. Traffic, Covid and then floods finished them off.
Some areas I visited such as Galaxy, Sumatra Alan, or Bintaro which were quiet suburbs are now filled with shops and life. Reminds me of that Thai phrase ‘same same but different’.
