D's Place, now owned by Carl et el on Jalan Faletahan, Blok M is a bit of a fun joint on various nights. Wednesday night is the wet T'shirt competition (IMO Indonesia ladies are substantially better built than Thais) and Monday night is Beaver Night. Beaver Night involves a limbo bar which the lasses must pass under. 'nuff said.

I don't believe you KW anyway I don't think Blake 7 will mind you telling Butterfly anything.

I was out with them last night and Butterfly got knocked back by 3 slappers on soi cowboy before he could bar fine one.

Quite a sad sight really and he should change his aftershave or stop dribbling when he propositions prostitutes.

The latest 'place to be' in Jakarta; Immigrant bar/ lounge/restaurant

MrsKW took me and a couple of thai female friends out on Saturday evening, went to a new nightclub/lounge in Indonesia Plaza, its on the 6th floor, and has large windows, plus an open air balcony overlooking the Hotel Indonesia roundabout.

Anyway, little was I to know that they had male strippers on that evening. MrsKW and the 2 other lasses were delighted and took about 100 photos.

Apart from that, it was actually a really good place to go to, decent DJ, reasonable crowed, not too crowded, open all night, central location, and so on.

I think it was this girl's birthday, so she was allowed to get up and dance with Mr Chicken Legs.

The cafe offers a relaxed vibe. Guests can step through the phone booth to the bar area. (JG Photo)
Sleek Tabac Is An Oasis of Cool

I’m the kind of person who loves to stay at home. For me, nothing beats an evening in with a great movie, my favorite couch and a cold drink.

But just like anyone else in the city, I sometimes can’t resist the temptation to sample the nightlife on offer in Jakarta.

I also try to regularly visit different places. So after a few weeks of not trying anything new, I was glad to take up my friend Dakka Sihombing on his suggestion to visit Tabac.

Located in the ultrahip neighborhood of Kemang, Tabac sits just across from KemChicks supermarket. It promotes itself as a true bar and lounge.

Entering the place I was surprised to see how small the venue was — it seats fewer than 20 people.

A waiter named Nita greeted us from her small booth to the left of the entrance. She smiled as she said, “Welcome to Tabac.”

The place looked comfortable and homey with its New York-style interior design, a large wooden book shelf and artistic photos. Hidden speakers around the bar piped in mellow jazz. I immediately felt very much at peace.

It was nothing too extraordinary, but compared to Jakarta’s many noisy, crowded establishments, the vibe was relaxing and put us at ease.

A group of people sitting by the bar were finishing their meal, so when they left we took their spot.

Nita explained that Tabac was actually divided into two parts: Up front is the coffee shop, where we were sitting. The small space is open from 7 a.m., serving customers coffee and American-style snacks and lunches.

“Some people like to come in the morning and enjoy a cup of coffee before going to work,” Nita said.

The second part of the establishment is the much larger bar located just behind the coffee shop. Nita said the bar served a wide range of alcoholic drinks and could seat more than 100 people.

While Tabac’s coffee shop opens early, the bar doesn’t open until 7 p.m.

The name Tabac comes from the French word for tobacco, and Nita said cigars were available in the bar.

In keeping with the sleek, New York-style decor, customers pass into the bar through an old-style phone booth, just like the entrance to Manhattan’s hipster speakeasy PDT (Please Don’t Tell). At first I thought the phone booth was only another decoration, but Nita assured me that it was actually a door.

“That’s so cool,” Dakka said, excitedly.

When Nita came to take our orders I asked for their best coffee. She said cappuccino was the favorite, and I decided to trust her.

For the food I struggled to choose between a chicken sandwich, a chicken quesadilla or a burger. I again trusted Nita’s recommendation of the Tabac Burger, while Dakka ordered a beer and a steak sandwich.

Our food arrived in less than 30 minutes. I was surprised to see how big my meal was. A gigantic cocktail glass nearly overflowed with French fries topped with four hamburger sliders.

The fries were pretty much what you get anywhere else, though the burgers were delicious. The buns were hard to chew but the beef was extraordinary — juicy and full of flavor. However, I found the Rp 75,000 ($8.00) price tag a bit steep.

My cappuccino had a strong coffee flavor, offset nicely by the milk. It was certainly a step up from the fare at Starbucks or other chains.

Dakka said his steak sandwich was nothing special, but he also enjoyed the peaceful vibe of the restaurant.

“It’s the kind of place where you can go to escape the chaos outside and just chill,” Dakka said.

Tabac may not have broken any new ground with its food, but if you want to spend a quality time with some friends and enjoy a coffee or a few drinks, it’s definitely not a bad choice.
