I spent Christmas in Bali and was very lucky that the weather was good and had sunshine everyday. It was incredibly humid though as this was during the low season, but despite that and because it was the festive period it was very busy.
Too busy to be honest and as soon as you leave the resort the traffic is just interminable. I stayed in Seminyak which was really nice, quite classy and glad I avoided Kuta which was a low rent toilet... anyway enough said, had a great time there, but having crossed Bali off my list it's unlikely I'll return.
As it was the off season the winds were very high and the beaches were all red flagged, very few people braving the water except for a few teenage die hard surfers.
What was most memorable about the beaches though was the man made detritus washed ashore, an appalling sign of the impact man is having on this planet. No doubt driftwood has always been common, but logging must surely play it's part in the abundance washed ashore, but what was most disheartening was the abundance of plastic waste which must collect in colossal gyres before being cast ashore in huge quantities.
Those on the beach tasked with the constant and thankless task of clearing up the deluge told me that debris is constantly washed ashore between November and March and only subsides when the wind turns for the summer season.
