#17 Batavia Cafe

Dine in colonial elegance at Batavia Cafe, located in Kota in Fatihillah Square. This building was first built around 1850 and with high ceilings, lazy fans, dark coloured teak wood and hushed tones it feels much the same as it must have then.

#18 Bundaran HI (Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle)

Paris has the Arc du Triomphe, Jakarta has Hotel Indonesia Roundabout. The statue is allegedly called Hansel and Gretel but I've never heard anyone call them that. Bundaran HI marks the change of roads from Jalan Sudirman to Jalan Thamarin and is very roughly the centre of Jakarta. It's illegal to swim in the fountain. And there is always a dozen or so police earning money from the traffic as you are not allowed to U-turn despite it being a roundabout. Hotel Kempinski, Pullman Hotel and Mandarin Oriental all overlook this statue/fountain.

Located in Pacific Place Mall, Kidzania is a theme centre based around young children 'doing jobs' in different professions for kidzania money. eg: the play at being a pilot or a fireman or a radio DJ or a bank teller and earn money which can be spent on toys and snacks. They run a morning session and an afternoon session.

Tis. I made a mistake the first time I went not realising the the sessions are 9.00-1.00pm or 2.00-7.00pm. They charged us full price even though we entered at 11.00 am and then at approx 12.30 they start kicking everyone out and little willy had only done half the jobs. They also try and limit every kid to do each 'job' once.

In the Jakarta one (it's a Japanese company) the adults supervising and running each job activity has limited or no English.

Golfing in Jakarta is pretty good, many of the courses are excellent and there is approx 35 courses within an hour or so of course he city. An average round will cost around $50-$100 including beer and caddy fee. Find a list here

#25 - Visit Seaworld



Visit Seaworld in Ancol. Entry is about $5. They have approx 2 hectares of tasks and displays. Including an underwater tunnel, shark tank, dugongs, touch tank and feeding times. Gets busy during holidays. You can pay a little to go scuba diving in the main fish tank, they used to also have a shark cage dive experience, but no longer.

#26 - Visit the Bogor Botanical Gardens

The bogor Botannical Gardens are about an hour's drive south of Jakarta. Certainly worth a day visit but come prepared as they do not have many food options inside and parking is abysmal.

Huge, comprised of about 80 acres of different types of gardens and over 15,000 species of plants. (plus many birds and bats also). Originally set up by the Dutch East India company, Stamford Raffles established the gardens as they look now.

#28 - Visit the Catholic Cathedral

This cathedral, also known by its Bahasa Indonesia name Gereja St. Perawan Maria Diangkat ke Surga, is beautiful and very well maintained. It is indeed a visual treat both on the outside as well as on the inside. Of European design/architecture and wonderfully preserved, visitors are welcome to attend Mass though it is conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, (obviously) and apparently they have a good choir!

Other times it is usually open to the public. Outside is a little peaceful grotto and they also have a Cathedral Museum, which is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 12noon, to learn more about the history of the cathedral.

#29 - Visit Masjid Istiqlal

Located in Central Jakarta at Jalan Kathedral, DKI Jakarta 10110, this Mosque was built to commemorate Indonesian independence (Istiqlal is an Arabic word for "independence"), it was completed in 1978 and took 17 years to build.

The Minaret is 90 meters high, the Mosque has 2 domes the larger of which is 45 meters in diameter and is supported by 12 aluminum clad columns, it can accommodate up to 120,000 worshippers and has car parking for over 1,000 cars.

When asked to describe the city you live in, are you truly confident to claim to know enough about it? The question will be answered soon. Born and bred or soon-to-be-Jakartans can show their knowledge by finding out about the city from its hidden gems. The Amazing Big Durian Race is coming back, to test how much we really know about the city we call home.

While you still have a few days to prepare yourself for the challenge, Dan Roberts, a long-term American expat has revealed the main objectives of the event.

“In short, it’s a giant scavenger hunt,” said Roberts, who is one of the organizers of the race and chair of the Young Professionals Committee, “where contestants armed with cameras, race around the city taking pictures of interesting places and people, doing difficult tasks and collecting unique items from various locations. This wild exploration of Jakarta will highlight key attractions, restaurants and retail outlets while giving participants a chance to see a new side of the Big Durian.”

Hosting its fourth installment of the annual race on April 26, AmCham Indonesia (American Chamber of Commerce) Young Professionals is bringing a new list of 100 activities to choose from, as well as an additional 20 tasks and 20 unique items to collect.

Teams with the most items crossed-off the list and documented activities win the race. Roberts also adds that there will be real-time twitter quizzes and social media tasks. In addition to documenting your activities through pictures, there will be a new category of video challenges.

Meanwhile, returning racer Jake Wallis, can personally emphasize the importance of strategizing creatively for the race without losing the fun.

“We’ve hired a sport psychologist to make sure that we’re all mentally prepared for the race,” said Wallis, an expat from the UK. “We’ve put in a lot of hours practicing for the free-flow beer part of the day and we’ve also remembered to bring a pen which eluded for the last two years.”

With the exact starting venue of the race being announced 48 hours prior to the event, teams of three to four members are encouraged to gather by 12:30 p.m. Contestants will have time to plan and prepare for the event as well as, possibly, enjoy a cold beer or two until the race starts at 2 p.m., finishing at 7 p.m.

The event will be an enlightening experience not only for expats, but locals too with Jakartans realizing, despite being entirely raised in Jakarta, there are limits to their knowledge.

Take, for example, Fri Rasyidi, who emerged at the end of the race with a different philosophical perspective on her hometown. “Entertaining ourselves should not be restricted to our daily routines,” Fri said.

“It was an eye-opening experience. During the race, I realized it’s how you perceive things to be enjoyable regardless the situation. Rather than being stuck in malls and the same places, we should think more out of the box and start doing things we have always had in front of our eyes but never taken in consideration. Traffic is the essence of Jakarta and the race against time only made it more fun!”

Participants from previous years were left with memories engraved in their minds for a lifetime.

For example one of Fri’s favorite parts was a sudden handstand Twitter-challenge.

“It happened while we were in the car going to our next destination,” Fri said, “when suddenly we received the notification to perform a handstand and tweet the picture as proof. The fastest responding to the challenge was going to earn points. So, we stopped at a traffic light, piled out of the car, did the handstand, took the picture and were back in the car before the lights changed.”

This year, with over 120 participants from all around the globe, the Big Durian Race, will keep bringing surprises. Vita Antasari, one of this year’s organizers, guarantees total fun in discovering the quintessential Jakarta that surrounds us but is all too often ignored.

“Although we have a number of vouchers and gifts from a variety of sponsors,” said Vita. “It’s not mainly about the prizes. It’s more about the experience. Finding memories to treasure in our city is the ultimate objective to bring home.”
