Knee replacement at Bangkok General Hospital

In the near future it appears as though I will undergo knee replacement surgery. To many parachute jumps and past injuries have taken their toll.

This surgery will be done at Bangkok General Hospital by the same orthpod doc that did my last surgery. There is a thread here on TD about that adventure. Five days in the hopital followed by physical therapy should cost about B300,000 I am guessing. Luckily, I have adequate insurance.

Has anyone had any experiences with total knee replacements?

^One of my good friends here in the Philippines just had it done about three months ago. A retired Delta Sergeant-Major. Same reasons as yours. He had had two previous knee surgeries over the years, but finally had to have the whole deal done. Had it done, was on crutches for a few days, another couple of weeks on a cane, and is now dancing again. Swears it was the best thing he ever did and regrets he didn't do it sooner. Best of luck with yours. He's quite a bit older than you, as he sustained his first bad knee injury in Vietnam in 1970 with the 101st. Same Battalion I was in two years before him.

My wife is sorta crazy about insurance, so we have AIA accident insurance (For B2000 per year, the best thing going). Why? Because I told the doc that my accident happened in the last 24 hours. Him and I both did the wink-wink thing.

I also have AIA and BUPA major medical and health insurance. My wife thinks we need all of this because of my lifestyle or lack of one.

    Hope her plan works...

A lot depends on your age, Hilly

as you are probably ancient, the man-made variety will probably be easiest. Their problem is they only last 20 years or so

if you were a younger bloke, you would go for a knee replacement from a cadaver

they last a lot longer but the op is more difficult
    I have reported your post

Sounds too much like mine for the same reason. But you are getting off cheap. I am healthy and have dropped a huge chuck of change to AIA.

That is the main reason why it is often recommended to put it off as long as possible despite the pain. It is no fun to have it replaced age 80 again. But those implants keep getting better so there is hope the new ones will last longer.

Been almost a week since I have surgery.Maybe I am a pussy but the pain is immense. I am getting around on a walker but after about 10 steps it is time for a break.

Don't feel like eating or drinking beer so at least I have lost about 9kgs in the last week.

My physical therapy lady is probably one of the cutest ladies I have ever seen. She also believes in no pain no gain.

I hope that I have made the right choice...

In a year it will all be a distant memory. Time heals all. My hip replacement was a year ago and now I am fit and loaded for bear. Cheers.
