Whey Protein - Yay or Nay?

I'm thinking of starting up whey protein shakes again. I've been working out in the gym quite regularly for the last three months. I know many people take whey protein to up their protein intake, and to help maintain or lose weight.

There are many people that I've talked to that use it consistently once in the morning, and after workouts. Others I have talked to say they don't need it because they get enough protein from their diet.

The RDA for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, but that increases if you are an endurance athlete or bodybuilder. The FDA recommends 65 grams a day for people consuming 2000 calories and 80 grams a day for those consuming 2500.

How much protein do you consume, or think is necessary?

I don't feel I get enough protein in the day, and want to increase my protein intake, while decreasing my carbs. I've lost so much weight over the past three months, and workout with weights five days a week. I think the extra protein will help me recover my muscles.

What do you think of whey protein? Any good websites on protein or whey that you can recommend?

I do whey protein shakes daily... Depending on my workout schedule, I consume anywhere from 50 - 75 grams of protein a day through shakes...

Protein will help you build muscle mass, but you still have to go through the pain... Like the old saying goes, no pain, no gain...

I drink a combination of 4 to 5 shakes or hot protein chocolate drinks a day. GNC pro performance is my choice. The hot chocolate drink is awesome!!!!

There is scientific proof that it helps in muscle recovery and also helps you get a better nights sleep - 8 hours of sleep a night is needed for maximum muscle recovery.

Whey protein, especially when consumed as a pre workout drink increase muscle mass and help with fat loss.

Other less known benefits - improved memory, improved ability to cope with stress, and it increases serotonin levels.

Here is a site that lists other benefits and scientific findings. Whey Protein Institute - Benefits of whey protein

Drink it slowly or you can get some killer heartburn from it. It also makes me thirsty which is ok as I consume a ton of water.

A few people (never for me) have noticed headaches, cramps and excessive gas when they take whey protein.

Mix it with soy milk for extra protein (7 grams per cup). They have vanilla soy milk that taste great when mixed with the vanilla whey.

You can consume too much which can be hard on your liver. Just do the math from your weight.

see the website Getbig.com: American Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure and for more info this article Dave Picard's Bodybuilding for Real People: Nutrition

For me, I consume at least 200 to 250 plus grams of protein a day.

This comes from the whey protein (30 grams per shake), soy milk, smoked salmon (4 ounces 20 grams), a dozen egg whites (5 grams each) and wheat germ (9 grams per cup). There is more that I can't think from what right now.

Whey is not cheap. Especially overseas.

Whether or not to add whey protein depends on your Macros and if you think more protein will help, or if you think you aren't getting enough for your particular goals.

The RDA for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, but that increases if you are an endurance athlete or bodybuilder. The FDA recommends 65 grams a day for people consuming 2000 calories and 80 grams a day for those consuming 2500.
I don't know if the RSA is a good source. Maybe itis; maybe it isn't.

Give it s shot: increase your protein and reduce your simple and high GI carbs, and replace reduced carb intake with complex carbs, and also time your post working #1 and #2 meals accordingly.

What do you think of whey protein? Any good websites on protein or whey that you can recommend?
I think it worked for me, before I became lazy and fat.

It's easy, tastes good, and provided results. If you increase protein intake to 1.0 or 1.5 then drink a lot of extra water for your kidneys.

If somone isn't competing, I don't see the need to get more than than 1.0 g of protein per pound at the most.

Fuck that too, as a baby my beef drank milk for his protein, and now he is a big boy he is dead and in my freezer and I eat as much protein as I can daily, and when I run low I just send an email to my supplier in BKK and they load a big box with beef and dri ice and it goes on a Phetch tours bus and comes here to me.

Why can people not just eat normal food? It still contains protein and if you try different cuisines it even tastes of something. If you go to a restaurant or a mates place you even get conversation thrown in for free. Intake of protein (eating), should be a time honoured and pleasurable experience, washed down with a beer or a nice wine, in the company of friends.
Fuck downing branded shakes while riding an exercise bike too breathless to talk.
Sorry guys i'm just a dinasoar, nothing personal.

I'm dubious of it's actual effects for normal non-steroidal people. I do like shakes as an easy healthy meal though and like the way it(whey) adds flavour and thickness.

No, not at all. I don't eat them all at once either. Every morning, Mrs. Chi hard boils 12 eggs, then removes the yellow and sticks the whites in the egg.

I eat them in tuna salad, regular salad, plain, with a chicken breast, streak or my salmon.

Definitely agree with that no pain, no gain, but protein helps ease the pain, and the muscle recovers quicker.

Thanks for the replies guys. The links are great, Chitown. Everyone here in Korea buys their protein off the internet. My trainer recommends Whey Optimum. Anyone try this brand? It is supposed to be the best, but it is expensive..damn!

Egg whites are great. I miss getting egg whites in a carton from Canada, you can't get that here. 12 eggs seems like a lot though.

I'm going to order whey next week, and start it. The effects that you mention, Chi, are real. I often get excessive gas and bloating if I don't get the right whey brand. The pros of taking whey are also proven. I drink tonnes of water, so I don't see any problem with the kidneys.

Do you drink your protein with water or something else? I used to drink it with milk, but switched to water. What is your favorite flavor? I like the chocolate one. Any other recommendations? Strawberry or Vanilla?

Yay from me. You should try to drink a protein shake within the first 10mins of waking up in the morning. This gets your metabolism working early in the morning making you burn more calories all day. I then have another one after my work out. Gatorade is also my drink of choice.

    Indeed.

Unless you are an extreme body-builder you only need to waste your money on this crap if your diet isn't up to scratch.

I've started taking this stuff with me on the road. Rather than suffer a crap hotel brekkie I bung a bit of this stuff in a glass of water. Instead of hauling ones arse down to the restaurant at sparrows fart this whey powder stuff lets you get a bit more sleep after the excesses of the night before or extra time to play a bit of hide the sausage if that is on offer. Will certainly get ya through to lunch and makes a good pre-drinking session filler if in a rush.

My only problem has been a Customs official in China getting a bit interested in what powder was in the foil bag in my suitcase. One sniff of the chocolate flavouring and I think he and his mates had a bit of a laugh about confiscating it for their smoko break.

^ That is too funny. I can relate to that. I had two big bags full of protein in my suitcase when I first came to Korea. I figured it was lighter that way, as opposed to taking the huge tin. The security guards took it out of my bag, and checked it. It was obvious that it wasn't drugs, as it was brown.. now if it was white, then it could have been a whole different story.

This is kind of funny, because your metabolism is highest in the morning to begin with. I'd say that combining a workout, or some form of cardio plus protein would stimulate the metabolism even moreso. It is so hard to workout in the morning, but the best thing. I started biking to school, so that helps. Maybe I'll start a workout thread.

It is not advisable to execise too hard first thing in the morning, as the blood/sugar levels are at their lowest.

Yes, egg whites are a fast acting protein. After de-yoking them you can dip them in mustard and thrown them on a sandwhich or other food.

As for eating natural food for protein yes, natural foods are the best but because of time and convenience and a target protein intake that you can measure, some people use Whey. I do not. I do not chase protein in natural foods, either.

Ever thought of Male Spunk, supposed to be high in protein and low in calories, so give a lot of head and swallow, swallow swallow.

Do you also eat breakfast with your protein shake in the morning? If so, what do you eat to supplement? I read that Gatorade is mostly sugar, water and salt, and I don't see how it can be better than water in the long run. Do you drink a lot of it. I can see how you want to replace your electrolytes, but I've stayed away from it.

True, with the protein shake first thing in the morning for the metabolism. Remember that Gatoraid is good for electrolyites with sugar/sodium/potassiam, if you need to be re-hydrated.

Do you also eat breakfast with your protein shake in the morning?
You don't need to but mixing comple carbs is ideal.

I would only drink Gatoraid if I was doing endurance performance: a long run, or long bike ride where you are sweating a lot.
