    Health Insurance - preexisting condition.

Have had a minor issue for around 10 years, on my upper left torso. Thought to possibly be a small stone in my left ureter (too small to show up on x-rays/ultrasounds etc), or it got kinked (one Thai doctor’s thoughts), or possibly something else such as a pinched nerve, etc.

Typically go for a full medical checkup every 3 – 5 years, with extra mention to check that area for possible causes of the dull pain that comes and goes to varying degree. Have probably done 3 full checkups –xrays/ultrasounds, all fluids checked etc etc and none have ever found a cause.

As the years go by it’s definitely getting worse in terms of level of discomfort, and frequency and duration of such, but isn’t overbearing yet. If the docs were able to find the cause I’d get it sorted, but it isn’t showing its head yet.

Maybe time to get some health insurance with a view to them ponying up whatever the cost is to fix it when it does get too much in xxx years time. Previously covered with Bupa, but not anymore. I’ve never bought any health insurance myself, only car and motorbike insurance.

This seems quite good for seeing different packages.

But it’s all gobbledygook to me.

Of course it will all have been money down the khazi that could have been money saved is they say ‘Preexisting condition, no coverage!’

So I’d like one that doesn’t have that clause. If possible. Is there a way to check for such things, where maybe they add to the premium, but an issue that requires surgery that has existed in the patient for 10 years before buying their coverage will be covered?

I’d also like to be covered for cancer treatment.

Selecting Outpatient as well as Inpatient multiplies the premium by around 3. Which is a bit odd. I'm not too concerned about the premium, but about it being completely wasted if they say no on a technicality.

I'd be planning on possibly using it for surgery somewhere down the line, if the ailment gets a lot worse that they can actually diagnose what it is, where you're plonked in the hospital for a day or 3 while they get to work with the Thanksgiving carving knives.

Though it seems that surgery where you don't stay the night there is classed as outpatient?

If there is no medical record then it is not a pre-existing condition. IMHO

I needed a scan, which could have been done as an outpatient. I have only inpatient insurance. So they admitted me, did the scan and the insurers paid. A bit of paperwork, otherwise straightforward.

    Interesting, cheers.

I presumed preexisting conditions would mean that you've had the condition from before you started their insurance policy, whether it's on your medical record or not.

Does Thailand have national medical records, can an insurer go into a national database and see the 3 or 4 full checkups I've had at different hospitals in different cities and see the files?

    Anyone?

Cool, cheers. I'd rather throw 5 or 10k a month away rather than 15 or 30 if they say no after a few years of paying.

    I also don't like deductibles.

I use Muang Thai Life, and they ahve been very good, and of couirse years on never using it and then this year paid dividends.

had an urgent operation for a potentially life threatening condition (one of the doctors told my wife it was stage 4 cancer for sure; thankfully not the case).
used Ram hospital and ran up a 700K bill, which was settled without qualm. even telling the hospital to stop being silly when they tried to tag on soeme xtra charges (admin not nedical incompetence which is the main pain point).

as part of the proceduce i needed some "wiring" between the kidneys and the exit. found i actually was born with only 1 kidney (i knew but was a shock to everyone else).
This could hve complciated things but didnt take as pre-exisiting or anything.
im pretty sure im not answering your question but one of the follow ups (to remove some plumbing theyed left in) was covered much as shutree mentioned, so pretty sure OPD is sufficent.

Yes, I would have thought so too, Shutree. Unless you specifically want to tell an insurer about something so they can underwrite it.

This is a big problem with medical insurance... once you've had treatment for something it will be classed as a pre-existing condition, with underwriting making it difficult to change insurance companies.

Bupa are getting very expensive as I age, yet as I've had treatment for hypertension in the past and taken mild blood pressure pills, any new insurer would underwrite anything associated with hypertension. So, the treatment for any future stroke, heart attack, etc etc would probably not be covered. They could probably assign all manner of other illnesses to high BP as well, if it meant they could wriggle out of a claim. I am kind of stuck with the costs of Bupa.

Incidentally, my new gym regime and slight weight loss have had a noticeable affect on my blood pressure which is now down to acceptable levels, and I hope to soon get off the meds completely. But, it'll still be a pre-existing condition.

I dont think hospitals in thailand share data relating to patients, but insurance companies probably do.

if you made a previous claim for your regular check ups and results with any health insurance company, then anything found may very well be considered as a pre existing condition.

How can it be a pre existing condition if doctors didn't find anything? 3 times of finding nothing, can it be more NOT pre existing?

Well, such an underlying condition preexists any insurance policy.

Which I then want to use to pay for its treatment.

This lad had a major back surgery the doctors butchered, and he was struggling to get insurance becaue of iit. but i think the severity of the situation may ahve been a major factor. i will ahve to check in with him and see if he found somewhere

He's convinced himself he's an Adonis for near enough forty years.

Getting an insurance company to buy in should be a breeze.

It'll only be for 20 years after all, when he wants to be dead, apparently.

I used it once after a motorbike highsider which fractured me wrists around 2007-ish. When I stopped working here I didn't continue in the SSO scheme, which I really should have. I can't remember the reason. Perhaps they said I needed a pink ID card and I didn't have one at the time, or was planning to join the workforce again. Whatever the reason I didn't stay in it, unfortunately.

I pay for my own Cigna plan (Silver) and I have Inpatient and Outpatient. each cost almost the same, so double not triple.

Costs me 400USD a month and covers me worldwide excluding USA.

I can give you the advisor's email if you'd like to get a quote.

Have the doctors mentioned the possibility of 'referred pain' ? It could be somewhere nearby(ish) but the pain is not localised there.

It’s probably just gas and will only get worse with age.
