While I never paid attention to fasting having benefits, I have done it for years going back to when I was a kid by what I will call an accident.

I never eat bfast. Just a glass of OJ. I found that when I eat bfast I feel lethargic and lack energy which seems counter intuitive based on what people say

Lunch is always small in portion size and I do not eat bread, but maybe once every month or so having a sammy. I eat very small portions of rice when I do which is once every 2 or 3 days. I do like my taters though on BBQ days

Then on and off I like an occasional light snack around 2 or so. Could be fruit, chips, just depends on what I am in the mood for.

Dinner is balanced but I eat a lot of lo cal during the week like soups and salads except Friday and Saturday are my big BBQ meals. Dinner is always typically done by 5pm.

I will not eat again until lunch the next day sans the morning OJ. So I basically fast from 6pm until 11am the next day....every day. There are days that I am not even hungry at lunch time but my wife cooks up something.

My only crutch is I like a few beers during the day while I work around the compound and a pour of some Bourbon or whiskey to end the day. I don't smoke cigs and never have. My weight has been extremely stable for years now albeit with age you just gain a few and I am not going out of my way to drop 2 to 4kgs. Just not worth it. I am extremely active every day and track it on my health app and my watch. I avg 17k to 20K steps a day, take 2 or 3 bike rides into town a week for a green tea. My avg calorie burn ( As reported in the app ) is 1850 to 2250 every day. My calorie intake is probably just a bit lower than that but not a lot based on the fact my weight remains consistent. For me the biggest indicator is when I have a physical every few years and it reports as good and nothing really out of the norm. My cholesterol always shows a bit high and has for years but its consistent and as my doctor in the US, as well as here have said, some people just have a higher Cholesterol reading but the ranges set forth by the medical community are general guidelines. Each individual is very very different based on weight, pre conditions, activity level etc. Of course we all know they keep lowering the limits so they can sell you more meds and increase doc visits.

In my opinion as Ant and others have said, Diets or health tips are to be viewed as suggestions. You may try one and have zero results or even make yourself worse. I avoid new fangled scams that are all over the place now by dirtbag "Influencers" where they show a "Magic" weight loss program. Find a system that works for you and stick with it. Its easier for it to become a way of life versus changing all the time to the latest greatest.

Interesting. One issue with dietary advice is that you can find so many contradictions out there. Anyway, due to my blameless life I have kept my racing snake physique and calories don't seem to be a problem for me. That said, you'll not find me munching on corn chips. I love an occasional chocolate HobNob though.

It is the changes in the test results that are significant. This is the first year that my checkup showed some drifting numbers. The doc told me to stop drinking. Not sure those thousands of Baht were well-spent, the gf tells me that for free.

I should have. The gf was in the room too, so I'll never hear the end of it.

On the other hand he told her that she is overweight. Which she is.

We can enjoy a healthier diet together. Seared tuna and salad tonight.

I bought some Heineken 0.0 to show willing but I haven't summoned up the courage to try it yet. The very idea is depressing. I had a friend who was told to stop drinking and smoking after a heart attack. He said he wasn't planning on going softly into that dark night, so he didn't change anything. With the inevitable result.

The crap most western people have for brekkie doesn't help. Processed carbs, usually with added sugar.

Just western people? Have you seen what your average Thai eats for breakfast and the amount of sugar they consume?

I'd say a standard western breakfast of toast, eggs and a bit of fruit is much healthier.

Yep, from now on, every time you pour anything, she will be on you like a magpie sitting on a fence post. In fact, I would sue him for pain and suffering.

Look in the end, we are all gonna croak. Sure you can give up all the things you like in an attempt to live a bit longer but is it worth it? I say nope. Enjoy until your ticket is punched.

I disagree Hal. As was said, the crap I see people pile into their pneumonia holes at breakfast is absolute crap that weighs them down and causes a food coma. Its funny when I go on trips to resorts with my wife, I still only usually have a glass of OJ and maybe...and I mean maybe, will have an egg whites only omelet. But I see people walking by with a plate stacked with crap ( Thai folk included)

I agree regarding the all you can eat breakfast buffets, but you could apply that to a lunch buffer, dinner buffet etc.

People just gorge because they can.

Get a good breakfast down you and you're much less likely to end up snacking later on.

True point Hal. People in general get weird at buffet type environments as they think they may never eat again so eat all they can to get their moneys worth. I never eat at buffets because I never eat that much. Sure at many resorts they always include it but when I go, I eat little. I honestly do not know how people do it. Eat a monster plate of food at say 9am.....then eat again at lunch 3 hours...then again at dinner. Geeeezzuuuus that a lot of food and you know they did nothing in between each meal to burn it off.

Yeah, one of the joys about being on holiday in a different country is the chance of trying different dishes when you're out for lunch/dinner, yet you see so many people pile up with 2 or 3 plates at breakfast that it's a wonder they're able to eat again that month!

We had a few breakfast buffets when I was in Malaysia, Cambo and Thailand at Christmas/NY (you may remember the thread ) and I made a point of not eating much at breakfast so that we could go out in the evening and enjoy ourselves. Occasionally, we gave it a swerve cos we'd been out late the previous evening and weren't hungry. Screw the money, you're on holiday.

Just as to if breakfast is the most important meal of the day or not: If you're gearing up for a day of basically doing SFA it's not but if you're getting ready for a long shift that will include physical work and no guarantee you'll have time to eat whenever you're hungry through the day/night, it is the most important meal. You could also argue it's easier to skip dinner after a day of doing not much versus having had a busy day physically and mentally and your tired body needs fuel.

Re: breakfast - I used to eat a heavy brealfast (rice, egg + protein like hotdog, ham, sausage, etc - a typical Filipino "silog" meal), but yes it would leave me somewhat lethargic during the morning. Also, during the start of the pandemic/ lockdowns, I was eating my usual portions but was working from home & was less active - thus the pandemic weight gain of 4 to 5 kilos. When I was weighed (for a medical), I was surprised at my weight gain & that was when I did IF and increased my exercise levels.

To the one who asked me my age (forgot who), I'm old enough to be affected/ scared by high blood pressure but young enough to do something about it. I'm not taking any maintenence meds and Inhope I won't have to for many more years.

I'm content with my present size/ BMI and now I'm just maintaining my present weight. Both my mom & sister told me to not lose more weight since I might look gaunt (I agree). (and my mom is thevtypical Asian mom who will tell you if you're fat, lol).

I've lost weight everywhere and my jeans have become looser in the waist and even in the thighs. It was hard to slim down my thighs, but I think my hikes (and the prep for the hikes) took care of that.

Scandi diet as proposed by a Danish dietician:

Under the diet, each meal should consist of four handfuls of food — one handful of protein, one of carbohydrates, and two of vegetables — plus a spoonful of fat.

I dunno. I have very big hands...
