    Skin cancer check-ups

I'm guessing that Americans and Aussies are generally much more aware of skin cancer than we Brits, however strangely enough Europe dominate the top ten countries for melanoma rates, I believe largely due to solariums.

Anyway, having spent my younger years not being so careful in the sun I am now a lot more wary, although living in Thailand it's impossible to completely avoid, especially with a demanding garden to look after.

I try and get my skin checked up every year now and would thoroughly recommend Assoc. Prof. Dr Niyom Tantikun at Bumrungrad. He spent a lot of time training in The States and so is familiar with western skin, which isn't so easy to find in Thailand. A check-up at Bumrungrad costs a bit of course, but what's the price of detecting a potentially fatal cancer? Many insurance companies will cover the cost of a check-up as well.

I try and get checked every year and the doctor cut a basal cell carcinoma out of my left shoulder in 2019. The next time I went back was this week for my 'annual' check-up, and when he asked why I had left it so long, I claimed difficulties with Covid lockdowns, etc etc. He rightly admonished me and said that skin cancer doesn't wait for Covid... lesson learnt. He also took the mickey out of my shirt... no lesson learnt there as the shirt was pretty cool.

Thankfully, after a thorough inspection he gave me the all clear, which although in my slackness I'd left it for three years was still relieving to know. I can't recommend strongly enough how important it is to get checked... had my carcinoma not been found three years ago it could have turned into a real problem.

And it wasn't a wasted trip... of course not only did I gain the relief of being given an all clear, during his inspection of the more difficult to see areas he discovered eczema across my lower ball bag (it's been a bit sore for a couple of years now) and a fungal infection up the crack of my arse. Very expensive ointment prescribed for both.

And I got two nights in Bangkok out of it without having to visit a single passport office!

Fungal infection in your ass crack. Now that was just a bit too much information!

Coincidentally, I went for a skin inspection this week also. Got an all clear and even though I am starting to grow barnacles, they aren’t cancerous.

Friend of mine was diagnosed with skin cancer. Six months later he was dead.

Mom and uncle are blond and blue and spent their life in the sun (S. Florida). Not a care in the world. My mother is constantly checked now and has dark spots
burned off. My uncle has had pieces of his ear removed and upper lip.

I’m blond and blue and grew up in S. Florida. House on the intercoastal and pool in the back yard as an adult. Love the water.

Still do, but I’m more aware/cautious of the problems now.

Couple of weeks ago I also got a checkup here in Thailand.

    Can’t be too safe.

Edit: two things that might be helpful.

    1. I went to a private Thai hospital (called for an appointment). Cost was under 30.00 (thirty) US dollars. Or less than 1,000.00 (one thousand) baht.
    2. Wear nice underwear (girls. they should be matching). You will be requested to remove your clothing and there might be a nice-looking Thai nurse in the room taking notes.
