    Cataract Quickie

...right-eye lens replaced yesterday in a procedure that took 15 minutes in the operating room: old clouding-up lens dissolved in situ and replaced pain-free with a flexible Japanese model that is now getting used to its new forever home. A bit of prep was required beforehand and a number of eye drops needed afterwards, but clear vision has been restored...B60K at BNH includes doctor visits, surgeon's fee, meds for a month, nursing, replacement lens and follow-up consultations. Worth every baht, imo...

Good stuff. I wear specs, gave up the contact lenses after an annoying bout of tropical conjunctivitis over a decade ago. I've often thought of having that laser eye surgery.
Has anyone here had that done?

    ^^ great news.

My eyes also need doing. Not Cataracts same as yourself, just aging eyes.

Needing glasses for most things now. Used to be just for reading.

What was the name of your doctor?

    Thanks

Dillinger had something done, but he was in Malaysia at the time.

    I need Thailand.

In Canada. Price was $4200CAD, but I paid just over half that with benefits from work.

Same experience as me. I used to have perfect vision near and far and then got old.
The surgery corrected distance and and it should remain. It corrected near enough to not need reading glasses for now, but that will eventually fade as I age.

Tom, was your replaced lens a mono focal one or a multi focal one?

...no idea and didn't think to ask. There was a pretest that involved determining that (I think) and the results went straight to the surgeon...here's the info I have: Hoya model PY-60AD, power: +21.00D (if this helps)...

Sounds like mono focal. Most likely due to it being just one eye.
I was given a choice for lens replacement, but not for Cataracts. Both eyes with multi focal lenses was priced at $9000CAD, but would never need glasses for near or far again.

Eye surgery is definitely a little unnerving. With laser you get to hear your eye sizzle, and then smell it.

    Me too.

Had a chance to get corrective Lasik a few years ago - but passed on it. A family friend was a quite well known eye surgeon - and he wore glasses.

It's not so bad, though it may not sound like it when I say they clamp your eyelids open for the duration

Cataract surgery was ok, they gave me a Benny of some description before the op (I had both eyes done at the same time at Bumrungrad) that made me relax then of course they use anaesthetic eye-drops so there's absolutely no pain or discomfort at all. Well actually that's a lie because my lower back got really sore from laying perfectly still on a rock-hard operating table for a lengthy period. But the results were incredible, it's like going though life watching a 50 year old shit TV then suddenly someone puts the latest hi-def TV in front of you and you're seeing everything in vivid colour again.

Oh, I had mono lenses fitted. Could have had bi-focal lenses fitted but I don't mind using reading glasses for very small print when necessary so it was no problem.

^ HW ... exactly what did you have done?

    Price?

Oh, I also get a sore back doing what you had to do.

I've broken my back twice over the years.

Cataract removal and lens implants into both eyes. My eye-sight was both weak and permanently cloudy before the procedure. I forget the exact price as it was about 6 years ago and insurance paid anyway but it cost about 140k Baht total. You could email places like Bumrungrad or Rutnin or where TC had his done to get a price, it's a very common procedure these days.

Laser eye surgery and lens replacement (what Tomcat had done) are different procedures.
Get a free eye test at any local optician and enquire what one you would benefit from most. Ask for a referral to Adelaide eye and laser clinic 215 Greenhill road - they will test you thoroughly and give you the options.

I had lens replacement done 3 years ago, perfect no glasses required and my eyesight is as good as a 20 year old.

Sorry Tom if it seems I've taken the thread over ... it's just that I have so many questions.

    So ...

To those here who have had the corrective Lasik (laser eye surgery), did you have both eyes done at the same time?

    Both eyes have patches?

    Tips for a newbie?
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

^ I did draft a post about headworx saying he did both at the same time. It is somewhat controversial. There are some benefits (especially with cataracts), but there are some dangers.

A few years ago, I knew of a case were some guy (client of a friend) who got both eyes done for one of these corrective "supervision" surgeries - in Pattaya.

    Infection, lost BOTH eyes.

F*ck that. I will never do both eyes at the same time for anything.
