    Name this potion

My MiL, who isn't the sharpest knife in the box, can't read or write, bought this magic potion that she claims will make my daughter eat more. My missus, like most Thai women, will not go against her mothers wishes, and intends to give it to my daughter. My missus won't tell me the English translation so I can read up on it. So can anyone shed light onto what it is?
At first I thought it was, due to the pictures on the label, a cleaning agent for TV's and audio equipment. Dunno why but I can't get the picture to go vertical.

Wife said it's a medicine called Computer brand. She said she has never seen or heard of it.

She will research more if you are interested

My wife said it's a mix of Thai Herbs that will supposedly make you hungry and want to eat more.

So a bit more digging, it's your typical Thai herb concoction that is not proven to do anything. Her quick research people said it tastes terrible and did not make them hungry. Nobody complained of getting sick from it.

In the end it won't kill ya but it doesn't do anything.

Thanks for that. I suppose I'll just go with the flow and let the daughter consume it. Last thing I wanna do is row with the missus.

No problem. Glad to help. My FIL has taken a variety of Thai herb concoctions to help him with aches and pains and none of them did anything to help. But didn't hurt him either. I usually laugh and say "Whatever works"

    Natural and herbal health remedies.
    Nothing destructive.
    More beneficial than not.

Been around for ages, in one form or another.
    Suspicious Farang need not apply.

I've found some of the wife's herbal stuff to work really well.

The little yellow tablets (maybe not herbal?) that you take when you feel a cold is coming on - and it just stops it from happening, is exceptional; better than anything else I've taken for the purpose. The wife also has a horrible little smelingl brown thing you take when you have stomach pains; that works great too.

Another perspective, sure the Thai's have folk cures. We have all put a balm of some sort on a mozzie bite. But on this one I personally go the other way.

If the kid wants or is okay with trying the stuff fine. It as Jeff says wont hurt her.

But as a dad I would not want my kid taking that stuff. Never been to any lab of any sort for testing I am sure. Medical stuff with kids is a tough cross cultural marriage issue to deal with. Is she not eating enough and why is the bigger question for me. Good luck mate..

Prag is there a genuine reason your daughter needs to eat more, is she too thin or does she just have a high metabolism? i'd not pour that stuff down her if i was you.

Generally the concoctions the old auntie brews work for me. Constipation, diarrhea, skin problems, insect bites and even snake bites. Pain remedies as well.

Coupled with her incredible pressure point massage, nothing ails me for long.

Usually all top off with her speciality. Herb that can be smoked or eaten on a pizza.

She's a picker but other than that she's fine in my eyes. Rarely sick and prefers snacks to cooked meals but don't all kids these days?

I say no. But my missus and MiL think she should be a fuller figure but she's only 10. I tell my missus puberty is only around the corner and wait until after that. But as I said earlier, my MiL isn't the sharpest knife in the box and she really doesn't understand these things but my missus is obliged to conform to her way of thinking.

Im always a bit dubious of drugs that come from the pharmacy in Lao or thailand. Shit like that i would give a wide berth. Thais seem happy enough to try that shit. Up to them . Seems like snake oil.marketing works pretty good . Sorry to be a bit negative but they do also enjoy buying creams that will allegedly make there brown skin white. Whats all that about?

I remember your girls form a few photos you posted up.

Looked normal to me, great actually ... same as my Boys, just older.

I teach my boys to ...

    • eat when they are hungry, stop when they are full
    • junk food is OK, but only after good food
    • this isn't a restaurant, that's dinner, eat it or go hungry
    • one likes pears, the other apples ... all good, as long as they eat some fruit
    • thankfully both like strawberries and mangos

I always encourage the Boys to try new things, even if it's just a nibble, just so they have an open mind to new foods.
If they go yuck, no way, we don't push it, we try again in a few weeks.

Apparently it takes 3 trys on a new food before it's accepted.
It's 'high 5s' for trying the new food, even if it's not accepted.

In their mind, they hate cauliflower, so if they are slow with their carrots/broccoli then I just need to mention a replacement of the veges on their plate with the dreaded cauliflower and magically the carrots/broccoli seem to develop a new appeal.

I can't even begin to imagine trying to force feed my child.

One of the Boys is a little more a fussy eater and we are sensitive to his likes and dislikes.

We allow 'eat and play' sometimes, depending on the meal type and what happening in the home.

The Boys most requested meal is plain omelet (sometimes with pork mince) and rice.
Some cooked carrot sticks and that's OK by me.

Favorite take-a-way is nuggets and chips ... the fussy eater prefers less salt on his chips.

The only real battle on the food front between me and the missus is her lack of veges.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

Yea, I kinda second AO on this.

Really best not to take chances - no harm, no foul, no manufacturing control, interesting marketing eh? "computer" brand - trademarked?

List of ingredients - but, what is really in the concoction and in what concentrations? Always have to worry about adverse reactions, allergies, etc.

None of my business, but, if I was facing a similar "dilemma" I would probably take a hard line against unproven, untested, and what I would consider "unreliable" folk medicines being administered to a child.

Heard of "overdoses" of vitamins, supplements, etc. in the USA, also, recent deaths reported in Thai news of the diet supplements.

    Great risk, little reward.

Got bit by a tree snake few years back. While not life threatening, hurt like hell and some swelling. Old aunties balm eased the pain and swelling. Had it been a cobra bite, would have bypassed auntie and been off to hospital in a hurry.

Bladdy 'ell leave the kid alone. Tell the interfering mother and MIL to get back to the lakorn, or that there are winning lottery numbers being magically sent down from the clouds outside. Then talk to the kid about what food she really likes, spend time with her out shopping for them, start teaching her about cooking/preparing them, and them together with her.

Then the reason it was soon better was not because of any of auntie's miracle potions but because the bite was harmless and you would have pretty much had the same results if you'd applied Savlon, a portion of lasagne or an old car tire to the wound.

Can't speak for your potion and let's hope it does at least part of what's claimed, but after wifey's two separate attempts to herb her face into the glossies ended up at the derma clinic with serious costs and the second time having to stay indoors almost fortnight, instructions from the top are to keep clear of these magical brews.

If your's does experiment, keep a close eye on all parts; once they 'believe', if it starts going wrong they'll stay with it and blame something/one else.

I tried some real nice nutty shampoo concoction in the hair days, till it started dropping out in clumps; was probably brewed in some backwater tank, my first and last endeavour with unproven Thai mixtures.

    JPPR2: I wouldn't call it a medicine.

Remembering, too, that pre-adolescent/adolescent metabolic systems are usually in overdrive and active until mid-teens kick in.

I have actually been itching on this one for a few years.

I remember about eight years ago finding out that one of my sons friends (they would have been around 11 or 12) was as heavy as i was (about 75 kilos then).

In our last year intern intake, 8 people, 4 would be classified as grossly obese, three as overweight. Only 1 as healthy weight.

Just today i was walking behind a group of a dozen uni students. All ranged from chunky to obese.

Diabetes now in thailand is 10% of adult population. It is going to be so, so, so much worse over the coming years.
