Yeah you are correct Thegent. I really can't speak bad of him as I found him to be the perfect friend in that if I needed help he'd be the first to come running. I still keep in touch with him but not so often these days. Fingers crossed he may one day come back but I doubt it.

Yep, tropics me too. My go-to is iodine tincture.

As to the OP, if it works, it works. Probably in the same way as honey, although the rationale is the sugar granules dehydrate the wound, thus inhibiting bacterial growth.
Having said that, my observation has been that many primitive societies find "magical" cures in stuff that is foreign or strange to them or has a strong taste or smell. In Fiji, Vicks Vaporub was a cure for everything from a headache to a broken arm. In Thailand those nostril snifters. Granulated sugar was not a thing in old Zimbabwe, and so it would have been another "magical" thing because it was foreign and had a lovely taste.

I'm not saying that this is the bacteria I get infected with on a regular basis but anyone living in the N.E beware.

I'll give it a go. Thanks.

As I understand Tee Tree Oil was issued to WW1 Australian Soldiers going overseas.
Thursday Island brand is reported to be the pick of the bunch.

Bounced off enough reefs surfing in my younger days and always salty water and preferably rock salt on all wounds worked wonders.

I had a tropical ulcer that in spite of the expensive treatment prescribed to me did not heal and I just poured salt on to it everyday for a week and it vanished but left a scar.

    Painful but effective.

Coastal sea water contains as many viral and bacterial pathogens as the fucking soil, you ignorant plank. If you live in a tropical environment and sustain a wound requiring dressing, you stay out of the water until it fucking heals and in fact that applies to anywhere..

Also, ordinary antiseptic cream at 100 baht is just as efficacious as fucking Tea Tree oil unless of course you take it up the arse preparatory to some colonic finger fun.

If your wound does get infected then you will need antibiotic cream and a course of antibiotics. If it has already taken hold and is in your blood system proper then its i/v time and say hello to nurse.

Yeah, but that'll last for ages. You realise you need to dilute it before application?

Salt works by dehydrating the wound and/or the bacteria. (Salted beef/fish etc).
Salt water is good for cleaning, but the wound needs to be dried.
Apparently sugar works the same according to the OP, adsorbing or absorbing moisture.

Either way, you were advocating seawater as a cleansing agent here in the Tropics and elsewhere, which is of course something only a fucking imbecile would do. Incidentally, contaminated Australian riverine discharges flowing into coastal outlets where Ockers bathe is as fucking dangerous as swimming in shit anywhere else, you dumb mofo. Also, naturally occurring pathogens exist in any waters and certainly the effect of storms on coastal areas will disturb the ecological balance increasing contamination risks.

Christ on a bike, is there any limit to your fucking stupidity.

All true, particularly near tourist areas....and also far away from them.

Yeah, well you are one of the lucky ones. They were probably not true tropical ulcers.

I had tropical ulcers and despite topical treatment they kept returning as the bactria had got into my system. A course of antibiotics finally fixed it.

A few years later I ran into some German hippies who had terrible sores and scars on their legs from recurrent ulcers and told them they would need antibiotics, but they were too New Age and said they didn't want anything to do with antibiotics.

About 6 months later I saw someone who knew them and apparently their ulcers had become so bad they had been hospitalized and (you guess it ! ) pumped full of antibiotics.

Sugar, iodine and other topical treatments like tea tree oil work fine if the bacteria is still sitting on the surface, or in the very surface tissues. If it has entered your body you will likely need antibiotics.

Well I invested 1000's of baht on antibiotics and creams with Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and even after a year it did not heal. And it was a tropical ulcer about the size of a 10 baht coin on the top of my right hand. Painful as well and very worrying.

Just one day started to pour salt into the wound cavity and covered it with a loose bandage and it healed after about 2 weeks.

It can be toxic in its concentrated form, there are websites with instructions on how to dilute it for various uses.
I haven't used it on open wounds, but as a mouth wash, for example, it's only a drop to a small glass of water.

Do you mean to say that you took antibiotic tablets and that they didn't work ?

Or did you use creams only ? Because my point refers to internal treatment versus external.

If you took tablets, perhaps you just didn't manage to find one which would kill that particular strain of bacteria ? Generally a broad spectrum one will kill most types of bacteria, but it's a bit hit-and-miss.
I was given the wrong type of antibiotic for a foot infection once, and it started to get worse till I went to a second doctor and got a better type.

It's astonishing that sugar will finally heal something like that, anyway.

You are a proven inveterate fantasist and fabricator or, in terms of your own vernacular, a lying sack of shit.

Salt can have a minimal effect on surface bacterial growth but it also damages cells.
Anyway, you probably just had a septic scratch which you have exaggerated through your usual alcoholic fantasies.

I have had tropical ulcers on my feet and lower shins and believe me they were a fucker to get rid of involving regular trips to the clinic for debridement, wound dressing and a continuous application of anti bacterial creams and topical antibiotics. They only cleared up after around two months when my folks threatened me with boarding school if I continued to swim and coincided when the monsoon finished with a lowering in humidity.

I still bear the scar and an indentation where the flesh never really grew back properly.

Salt, sugar, lactic expectorant from an inverted nipple on a full moon and the juice from a pregnant Tree frog are no fucking replacement for antibiotics (unless of course you are a fucking idiot or a TD frazzled fuckwit unacquainted with the notion of a continuous period of sobriety).
