    the Problem with Counting Calories

I found this article noting the problems, flawed approach, and time consuming method of counting calories.

I don't know who if anyone on his board subscribes to the "calories in vs. calories out" method, but this article sheds a lot of scientific light on why for many people, it just does not work.

As for myself, I generally focus only on macros (protein/fat/carb ratios).

Note that more and more emphasis is on the gut bacteria today. I expect to hear more research and article about it.

    IT'S TIME TO BURN IT
    The Calorie Is Broken

Calories consumed minus calories burned: it’s the simple formula for weight loss or gain. But dieters often find that it doesn’t work. Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley of Gastropod investigate.

The harder you work the luckier you get. Same applies to losing weight. Eat too much and no exercise = fat bastard.

I'm sure there is some kind of smug satisfaction to counting what you eat and how much you burn, but the truth is found on a weighing scale.

Time spent counting calories and what you burn could be used more productively, like swimming or cycling. Or you could just stop stuffing your face with donuts and coca cola ya fat bastard.

I count intake but not expenditure. And it's not really 'tracking' either: I just stick to a present calorie/macro intake per any given day.

Does take a bit of effort to calculate it and set it up but feck all after that point.

If you burn more calories than you take in, you lose weight. Not rocket science.

No one needs to read the article. It's all about common sense, a functionality you seem to be lacking. No one needs to tell them that the sun is very hot, but you seem to need a google idiots guide for everything.

This article is for those who have more than basic knowledge and also deeper interest in the topic.

I don't count calories nor attempt to, but I do focus on macros in a daily approximation.

As I already said, I don't need to read the article. You are the thick one here, not understanding the physiology of calories and having to rely on an article for morons.

This thread is also stupid. Can you not do better BH?

flawed approach, and time consuming method
That is why i didn't read it.

All I know is Rick a guy in our marathon grouped stopped training and the next time i saw him he had packed on some pounds.

It is all about common sense and self control.

One can have a large helping ice cream for supper I've done that but then I don't eat anything else, with before or after. Beer is the same. Liquid bread or a steak in every glass. So instead of, not as an extra.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
You people, you think I know feck nothing; I tell you: I know feck all

A shit must have some calories in it, and some shits must have more calories than others.

So just spend each afternoon on the dunny readin TD and you'll be slim in no time.

No need to burn those calories, just shit them out.

    You're missing the whole point.

You should admit you don't know what you're talking about.

    Macros are "macro-nutrients."

    Protein, Carbs, Fats.

When focusing on Macros, people focus on the percentage of Proteins/Carbs/Fats in a day.

For example, 60% protein, 20% carbs, 20% fats.

The percentages can vary based on individual goals and preferences.

I see. But isn't that also counting calories to some extent?

I used to do the same and in doing so you have to have a good idea of the amount of protein, fat, carbs etc in your food and therefore how many calories of each you are eating.

Sorry, but I do since nutrition is a big part of pharmacology. Ever hear of Total Parenteral Nutrition? Thought not.

Calories have a finite amount of energy and I am assuming you already know that. Every food has a certain amount of calories which can be calculated to an exact amount. This caloric content is also finite and does not vary person to person which is why it is a good barometer for losing weight and determining ones nutritional daily needs. What does vary, is the amount of calories one needs on a daily basis to maintain normal body function. Consume too few calories, and the body will start to shut down while too many calories will cause an individual to gain weight.

It is an exact science, and health care workers use it all the time to calculate enteral or parenteral food requirements for patients who are unable to eat. This can be done for extended periods of time and was part of my normal duties as a hospital pharmacist. Along with making sure the patients had enough calories to maintain life, they also needed protein and electrolytes mixed in with the parenteral solution. It was also the pharmacist's job to assure proper protein and electrolyte balace for the patient. Often this entire process included the oversight of a gastroenterologist, a registered dietician and a registered pharmacist.

So you see BH, I do know a little about this topic and to think calorie counting is not valubable for weight loss is rubbish. That is why I did not read your article, since it is rubbish as well.
