    Colds

Two or three times a year I come down with a cold.
Not life threatening and something I used to get in the west.
The big difference I have found between here and there is the 'strength' of the cold I get here. It knocks me out for 24 hours or so.

I get the usual sore throat/runny nose but far worse here than in the west and on top of that every bone in my body aches as if I I had received a good kicking which was never a symptom in the west.

It comes on quickly without warning, knocks me out and leaves similarly without warning a couple of days later. Leaving me knackered for a few days.

I have learnt now to take to my bed and just let it runs its course.

Does anyone else here suffer from ailments which they had in the west but are much more or less virulent here in Thailand?

Yep, I have gotten the Thai cold more than once. It's a bitch. It must be a slightly different virus than back home. The Thai's are not affected as much by it. Back in the US my wife would get knocked out by the US cold virus.

That is not a cold, it is 'a flu'.

I used to get a cold all the time in the west, now hardy ever.
I put it down to my previous job, which involved frequent travel, in the germ factory, airplanes.

Now I travel infrequently and never seem to get a cold
Could be less stress and a build up of immunity to the local viruses.

Interesting to note regarding Thais: This time of the year, there seems to be a circle of sensitivity to cooler climes and often display cold-like symptoms for a day or two......it's not really a viral ailment.

Of course, being exposed to the coolness doesn't, in any way, induce an infection.

I know so many that are temperature sensitive.

    Personally, I'm never sick.
But on those occasions - it it's me rather hard for a couple of days....short time.

A flu is a virus but a cold is only your body's reaction to temperature changes.

Back in England colds and flus were killers for me 3 or 4 times every year, whereas my friends would claim they were on death's doorstep with a mild case of 'the sniffles'.

Here though, I rarely get colds but when I do get one it's never as severe as those I used to get. I have cold showers everyday and never use the air-con at home. When I'm out somewhere and get hot I cool myself down gradually as opposed to standing in an icy blast from an air-con unit or vent.

One ailment that I never suffer from anymore more being here is dandruff.

Dengue, possibly. The body aches and short time until recovery point to it. A cold usually lasts a week. Eat 2 grams of Vitamin C per day, drink a lot of water, and against the pain helps paracetamol, or better diclofenac.
