Thanks for the PM reply Kurgen. My first thought was to try BPH as I use there for most things but instead I'll make an appointment with Nigel Kelsey when I am back and see what he recommends.

Found a small web page advertising his clinic: Pattaya Sports Clinic

When I first hurt my back I couldn't walk because of the pain.I started chiro three times a week for close to 6months but as time went by my treatment requirements dropped to the point where I now go once a month.I take daily,Tramadol,Temazapam and
occasionally Diazapam. Both my Doctor and my Chiropractor agree that there is a fairly good chance (but not guaranteed)that surgery may fix my problem.

They both agree that because of my age and the physical nature of my job that while the drugs and the chiro keep me mobile I should delay the surgery as long as possible.

Please note that because these actions work for me,In no way would I recommend them for others. Please seek medical advice.

Tiger Balm works very well too.

Rub a big lump of it into your bollocks and hey presto, you can't feel you back pain any more.

That pain sounds like a pinched nerve around the lower lumbar region.
The pain is usually on one side, extending all down the leg and sometimes up the back.
Frequently most acute at the pelvic joint and where the gluteus muscles join the pelvis.

I had that problem three years ago, due to sitting in the wrong position and twisting my upper body around to my left. I couldn't walk 30 yards without having to sit down in pain or stopping to stretch my leg on a raised object and pressing down on the thigh to stretch the tendons.

Finally, after trying massage, deep heat liniments (which definitely relieve the symptomatic pain) and exercises I got into a hot bath and soaked for half an hour until my muscles and tendons had warmed and loosened to a degree.

Then I sat on a low chair, grabbed my left foot and raised it to touch my right forehead.
That was difficult initially, but after a few attempts it became easier.
Then did the same with my right foot, touching my left forehead with it, to balance the stretching effect on both sides of my pelvis. and back.
That fixed it almost instantly, the problem with walking receded at once, until I was walking and/or sitting/lying down without pain again.

    I've been fine ever since.

I used that method to fix the same problem on two other people, the male (normal weight, 45 yo)had been seeing an acupuncturist for weeks at $80 a go without anything more than symptomatic relief, no real improvement.
He used the method I described and has no further problems with that issue.

The female was so crippled by the same problem she was on opiates and using crutches and a wheel chair. Overweight and 38 yrs old, she wasn't a happy camper.

I managed to persuade her to try this trick, but of course she couldn't get her toe up as far as her forehead easily, but, she persisted and finally after losing more weight and joining a Pilates class to improve her posture, the problem went.

^^ Feck - Kurgen beat me to it.

ENT - I will put that on my list of things to try.

Actually saw something in the news today saying antibiotics can cure 40% of all lower back problems. Was the Daily Mail though...

I have had loads of back trouble which has left me with some nerve damage, but it’s manageable. Plenty of advice above, I will add some of mine.

Get something that is firm but not uncomfortable, a roll of bin bag liners is ideal or rolled up newspaper. Lie on the floor and slide the object under your lumbar region so it supports that area, some adjustments may be required so your lumbar region is adequately supported. This helps align your lower back and could help relieve the sciatic pain. Alternatively it might make no difference but it’s cheap and simple.

Take Ibuprofen but not long term. If Ibuprofen kills the pain then inflammation is involved. There’s loads of "suck it and see" involved but if no initial improvement, see a Physiotherapist, maybe traction will help. If no improvement then have a scan done and then the Physio will be able to see the problem rather than trying to diagnose it based on your symptoms.

I bought an Inversion Table which is good for using at home. Basically you fasten your feet into this centrally hinged "table" then push yourself backwards and rotate until your feet are at ceiling level and head near the floor. Gives me pain relief every time. Chok dee.

Not sciatica, FP. As Rawlins said, that's to do with the sciatic nerve that runs to your legs and gets pinched somewhere in your spine.

No saying that you haven't got the same thing, but the nerve getting pinched runs to your arms, instead. The other thing you may want to just get checked out is carpal tunnel syndrome if you still have the problem (hopefully you don't)

I've had sciatica 3 times. Each time I had indescribable pain down my left leg and my foot was numb. Lasted between 5 and 9 weeks each time and each attack started on one of my shifts as a carer. I realised that what I was doing was bending, twisting & lifting all at the same time - not very healthy for your back, so I'm really careful about how I bend and lift now. Nothing worked to ease the pain for me, though I was guzzling co-codamol and ibuprofen. I was walking bent over and couldn't walk more than about 50 yards. Couldn't stand for more than a couple of minutes, either. Anyone with sciatica has my heartfelt sympathy.

Try this. It worked for me.

I got sciatica from sitting in a cheap crappy chair for hours without taking regular breaks.
If this doesn't help you might need something more substantial.

I have been for 3 bike rides this last week with no problems so I think it has finally sorted itself... That is about 4 months from when it first started to feeling OK again.

I am going to be careful about any lifting from now on and will try the stretches above as my job which involves sitting in a chair on a boat for 12 hour shifts could bring it on again.

As an aside, I had the best Thai massage I have ever had yesterday down at the blind massage place in Naklua... Felt great after the cycling and cracked my back in all the right places.

The key is finding out why you have it. Before you do that anything is just temporary relief. Something is pressuring the nerve, something is broken or misaligned.
For me it is one leg slightly shorter.
As your back muscles reshape to cope with the problem they generally make it worse, or add new problems. Find out why, then correct it and do some exercises to strengthen and and restore your backs proper balance. Good sports physio, stay away from chiro and other quackery.
One of my legs is slightly smaller too. I am greatly releived that it does not drag the ground, as it would be quite painful.
Joking aside, I am always fighting this too, and I have several tools to help me. 2 tennis balls in a panty hose, spaced to contact either side of the spine. You lay back on it, and you can move slightly to fine tune it. Do the vertabrae above and below the disk. Sometimes I have to do this 3 or 4 times in a day, after which I always feel good relief or better. My other tool is a heavy plastic cane-like item, with the 'handle' part having about a 25cm diameter. A bunch of knobs protrude out all over, and you can easily reach any spinal area and apply pressure or massage. I have lived a hundred miles from a doctor for many years, so I tried a lot of self help cures. My remaining kidney developed an allergy to ALL anti-inflammitories, so no help there. Ibuprophen can kill me. Perhaps this can help you guys too. Oh, I found the tool on Amazon, just look for back items.

Physio's in Rehab recommended bike riding to ease back pain when i was there 10 years ago. The forward leaning postion stretches the spine and similar exercise like pull-up's will also help.

Exercises that involve running/lifting compress the spine. I have also found that walking on hard surfaces can also cause problems. Lifting/gardening etc: will only exacerbate the condition if one has herniated discs. Correct posture is also very important.

Rehabilitation centres, i believe, have now stopped group exercises as very rarely do people suffer from the exact same injury.

To have a better understanding of what treatment is required for a spinal injury a scan is a must do.
