Is going to the gym everyday over doing it?

I've been doing it now for 2 months.

I started off with 30 minute sessions for the first month and then increased this to an hour a day.

Is 7 days a week overdoing it? Should I give myself some time out? If yes, how much/often?

I'm in my mid 40s and never exercised previously if that helps.

try 1 in 3 off to give the muscles a chance to recover , also vary the areas you exercise on a rotating basis , arms , torso and legs in rotation .

    ^ wot he said.
Pick different routines that exercise differen and opposing muscle groups and rotate, else it is counterproductive.

It depends on how long and how hard you work out.

For average intensity for 1.5 to 2 hours, 6 day a week is enough. Take one day off to recovery.

If you are doing 4 to 5 hours of exercise a day, work out Mon / Tues and take Wednesday off and then hit it Thursday Friday and take the weekend off. That is the schedule I follow.

For 3 hours a day working out, you could also workout Mon - Friday and take the weekend off.

    How is it counterproductive, please?

I'm doing no more than an hour a day. Almost a total body workout really all in all.

I was hovering under 190lbs, I'm now down to a nice steady 160lbs, and I have the same physique as I did when I was in my early 20s.

I'm taking it very easy on the lower back and abs routines.

Muscles need time to repair themselves if you're doing pure weights. I don't do more than 3 sessions weights / week. The rest is cardio, stretching, punchbags, etc. Although it sounds like you're doing okay already.

^I agree whatever works for you and you dont hurt yourself. If mostly just cardio everyday is fine. More weight training then might want to take a break every few days to let muscles recover.

Sounds like you're doing fine. I do 60-90 minutes a day, five or six days a week. Problem I have is that as time goes by, I keep adding stuff to my routine, and it creeps up to 2 hours a session. I do some cardio to warm up, then mix machines and free weights, although I tend to use free weights more. I also am careful of my lower back, as I've had problems before, and do a fair bit of stretching throughout (which I never did in younger years). Am 5'10" and steady over the decades at 175 lbs. Same at 64 as I was at 34.

In my considered opinion, the answer to the original question would be an emphatic yes.

Try taking a day off each week so you do not get bored eventually. Do chest and Triceps day 1 Back and Biceps day 2 Shoulders day 3 Legs day 4 and then go back to day 1. At the start of your routine do 20-30 mins cardio - E.g Running, cycling, rowing then 45 minutes weights and you will continue to build stamina and strength.

Well done on your efforts so far!

Chitown - taking it far too seriously and I would not recommend this to anyone who is not into serious bodybuilding or a would be athlete.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

    Thanks, folks.

I've noticed that since I stopped eating red meat and drinking beer, I've lost a lot of mass on my lower legs.

What's the best way to develop these muscles?

Calves are the toughest place to build up. I've had very little success. You can try the leg press machine and just move your toes back and forth stressing the calves. I alternate upper body and lower by days. Stomach, lower back, and cardio daily.

With all due respect, why ask a simple question that is either common knowledge, I thought, or easily googled ? There must be a million health and fitness websites out there that will tell you this and it's not as if it is a Thailand specific question.

    Just asking.

Bike exersize in a gym is boring , why not get a decent Mountain bike (about 10/12,000) I bought mine about 8 years ago for 8 and its still perfect cos its well maintained, try and find the little off main road soi's ,great fun and you see "the real Thailand" ,I do 8/10 kliks a day every day weather permitting starting off about 7 am before it get's too hot ,it should take you about 45 minutes.
