    Gynecomastia

Just recently I developed what feels like a small cyst, around 2cm diameter under my left nipple. It was fairly sore at first, so a bit worried I went to get it checked out at the Bkk-Pattaya hospital.

The Doc informed me that I had the above condition (fairly common in blokes my age, 46 yo), and that the only way to cure it was to have it surgically removed and a biopsy done on the tissue to find out if it was maybe malignant. He offered to do this on an out-patient basis at 19,000 Baht.

Seeing as I'd been referred to the "Surgery Dept" in the first place, this was the diagnosis I'd been expecting. After visiting "Dr Google", the info on a lot of medical sites states that:
Gynecomastia, especially in pubertal males, often goes away on its own within about six months, so observation is preferred over specific treatment in many cases. Stopping any offending medications and treatment of underlying medical conditions that cause gynecomastia are also mainstays of treatment.

Has anyone else had this condition and what treatment did you receive?

I don't mind the money issue as its' covered in my insurance, but if the tissue build-up dissipates on it's own after a while I'd prefer not to have surgery.

Allow me to be the first to congratulate you on growing a pair of boobs (or a boob?).

Under the circumstances, I will refrain from the normal cry of this board of "show us yer tits" if you don't mind.

On a serious note - if you are not happy with what one doc has suggested - go see another. Be advised that gynecomastia is associated with an increased risk of (male) breast cancer - so don't leave it to long.

^^Cheers. The unnoticeable "moob" doesn't appear to be changing in size or anything yet, but seeing another Doc fairly soon is on the agenda.

Look up bodybuilding threads where its known as bitch tits.
Bodybuilders get them because of high male hormones trigger equally high female hormones hence gynecomastia. They even produce "milk" like katoeys.

May go away of its own accord but why not look at what triggered it.
    Still get wood etc.

Had exactly the same thing about 4 years ago when I was 40. Lump under my left nipple.
Went to the Srinakarind Hospital in Khon Kaen which is a government hospital to have it checked .Had to wait a couple of hours to see the Dr who said it was gynecomastia. She told me not to worry but gave me the option of having a biopsy, to which I said yes.
2 hours later, in the afternoon, the biopsy was done and my bill came to just over 2000baht.
Went back 2 weeks later and received the results which were all clear.
Now there is no lump as they cut it out.

Thanks for the advice, all. I've never (knowingly) taken steroids, and don't take any other medicines regularly so the only cause of this is probably reduced testosterone due to my age..

I'll see another doc tomorrow and probably make an appointment to get it taken out and biopsied.

    You're wrong to assume.
Older Age Does Not Cause Testosterone Levels to Decline in Healthy Men

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2011) — A decline in testosterone levels as men grow older is likely the result -- not the cause -- of deteriorating general health, say Australian scientists, whose new study finds that age, in itself, has no effect on testosterone level in healthy older men.
The results, presented June 6 at The Endocrine Society's 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston, are the first findings released from the Healthy Man Study, according to principal investigator David Handelsman, MD, PhD, professor and director of the ANZAC Research Institute at the University of Sydney.
"Some researchers believe that an age-related testosterone deficiency contributes to the deteriorating health of older men and causes nonspecific symptoms, such as tiredness and loss of libido," he said.
Handelsman and his team, however, found that serum (blood) testosterone levels did not decline with increasing age in older men who reported being in excellent health with no symptoms to complain of.
"We had originally expected age to have an effect on serum testosterone, so the findings were a bit of a surprise," Handelsman said.
Two study centers in Australia recruited 325 men over the age of 40 (median age, 60) who had self-reported excellent health and no symptom complaints. To test blood testosterone levels, the researchers took blood samples from the men nine times over three months. They excluded men from the study who took medications that affect testosterone.
Obesity caused a mild and clinically unimportant lowering of blood testosterone levels, the investigators reported. Age had no effect on testosterone level.
"The modest decline in blood testosterone among older men, usually coupled with nonspecific symptoms, such as easy fatigue and low sexual desire, may be due to symptomatic disorders that accumulate during aging, including obesity and heart disease," he said. "It does not appear to be a hormone deficiency state."
The message for patients and their doctors, Handelsman said, is "older men with low testosterone levels do not need testosterone therapy unless they have diseases of their pituitary or testes."
This research was supported by the MBF (Medical Benefits Fund) Foundation in Sydney, which is part of the private health insurer Bupa.

Another *bump* update to this thread.

The lump totally disappeared on it's own after six months, as a lot of internet-gleaned info said it would.
Whether it comes back again or not, I'll update the thread. Hopefully not.
