    Thai Bacon

Right I think we can all agree that the pork in Thailand is pretty damn good, but much of the bacon leaves a lot to be desired, so time to find the best bacon in Thailand.

First up is from Bangkok Ham Products, probably the cheapest of the lot, think it was about 70baht a packet, in the background is a 30cm 12inch tile, this is streaky bacon which I prefer, not sure if Brits or Americans eat streaky or lean.

That isn't a giant fork in the picture, just a normal everyday fork, on putting it into the frying pan there was a couple of seconds panic as the bacon was too long, luckily in seconds the bacon shrank down in size and then continued to shrink

Taste was ok but this ones only gonna get a 5 out of 10 from me, God knows where it all disappeared to, maybe David Copperfield was in the kitchen.

Barely enough to fill a small sandwich.

sadly our resident expert on bacon is no longer with us

I believe his product would fit the criteria of Thai bacon and win the competition hands down .

As only a visitor to Thailand, i would request that someone teaches the hotel chefs how to cook the stuff, its only fit for shoe leather in most hotels.

I agree. You get what you pay for. If you want 16 slices of smoked bacon for £1.50, you can buy that imported crap from Holland thats injected with salt water.

If you want decent thick cut, dry cured bacon with the rind on, then about the only place you`ll find it is in a local butchers, and it will probably cost you half as much again.

Ive always struggled to find decent bacon in Thailand. It always seems quite popular with the locals in Tesco though.

In any branch of The Mall you can get English Bacon by B&M. About 8-10 rashers in a pack. None of that streaky stuff the disappears to nothing in the pan. About 85 baht a pack.

Also, saw in Carrefour for the very first time yesterday , what looked like a packet of English looking bacon without the streaky end bit, just the all meat eye. It wasn't labeled as bacon but it sure as hell looked like it. Didn't get any as already have a load in the freezer but next time I see it I'll give it a go.

Europa make decent back bacon. It is available in most of the cold meat sections and is usually about 90thb per packet of 5 rashers.

    Belucky Premium Back Bacon

Now this is the good stuff, 10 slices of premium back bacon from belucky, 94baht for 180grams so you wont be getting that in the 50baht Pattaya breakfast places, nice taste and hardly any shrinkage.

Ignore the fried egg, something went wrong with the frying pan, think it's one of those Thai pans that are too thin to use for cooking.

Antibiotics, steroids and loads of water...gotta love that shit...was told by a guy in the butchery trade in the UK this is why meat shrinks to such a level.

Belucky rocks for Thai bacon product...

Topps market is the best smallish supermarket in Thailand as far as I am concerned and I live in a smallish southern town so I have not that much choice...

I recently got some very good bacon delivered from Sausage King in Chiang Mai.

Very nice, little shrinkage or water.

No matter how good or bad you think bacon in Thailand is, it is all far better than the ghastly dry strips of shoe leather called 'beef bacon' that we used to get in Saudi !

At a slight tangent to the above post - in Qatar we could get tinned 'Turkey Ham'
tasted just like the real stuff!
Maybe because it was - with a bit of judicious scratching you could remove the label and underneath was the original - 'Prime Polish Ham '

That's ridiculously expensive for 6 strips of bacon.
I'm sure you can buy cured pork belly at the market for a fraction of that cost.
That striped bacon is simply pork belly which is one of the cheapest cuts from a pig.
it's the back bacon aka Canadian or Irish bacon which is dear. That's cut from the loin.
