Marmite's Guide to British Style Pubs in Bangkok

    NANA

    Cheap Charlie's
    Sukhumvit Soi 11

    Phone: 02 253 4648

Cheap Charlie’s is a Bangkok institution that’s been around for 25 years. It looks like a pile of driftwood washed up in a small parking lot and someone got some nails and wire and made a temporary shelter. There is an old newspaper article from the International Herald Tribune (July 05) that is laminated and posted on the front of the bar, with a headline that reads, “Cheap Charlie’s Rules: stay inside the yellow line, no prostitution, and no number 2″.

If you’ve been to Cheap Charlie’s before then you’ll understand the headline; if you haven’t then you need to go.

Again, Charlie’s is a place that falls short of all expectations, and is so unique that it defies description. A place you’d never imagine until you’ve seen it. A place with the cheapest regular drink prices in town.

Cheap Charlie’s is filled to capacity or beyond nearly every day, assuming it’s not raining. There’s a reason for that… it’s got ‘atmosphere’. It may sound unappealing to sit on a hard wooden stool, with a wobbly table for your drinks, inches from cars driving into a commercial parking lot in an outdoor bar that is totally exposed to the weather and offers no service beyond one middle-aged Thai man opening drinks and serving highballs from a wooden hovel, but somehow it works.

The cheesy signs, the collection of items that has been accumulating for two and a half decades, and the homemade toilet are all part of what makes the winning formula in a place that lives up to it’s name.

Cheap Charlie’s is the place you go when you don’t need to impress anybody, you just want a cheap, cold beer and a conversation.

    Chequers
    Sukhumvit Soi 4

    Website

The Chequers is a small bar located just down the street from the Nana Plaza, and along with Jool’s Bar, seems to be the equivalent of the ‘Washington Square style bar’ for UK (s)ex-pats. I actually went in here once with an ex-SAS (honest Guv!) chap, who later told me about one fellow in there who was going to deck me if I hadn’t had my ‘protection’. Hmm. Some people seem to like this place, but its not the first place that springs to mind when I need a beer. The food is fairly good, especially if you're into cholesterol.

    Finnegan's
    Sukhumvit Soi 4

    Phone: 02 656 8160

    Website

Unlike Hanrahan's across the street, Finnegan's Pub is a 100% authentic, Irish owned Pub. Located in Bangkok's Sukhumvit Soi 4 you can enjoy decent food and drink in a friendly atmosphere.

    Gulliver's
    Sukhumvit Soi 5

    Phone: 02 655 5340-2

    Website

One of the best known places in Sukhumvit, it is a large and well decorated sports bar & restaurant. In addition to the massive interior, there is a large outdoor patio in the front where you can relax with friends and enjoy the warm Bangkok evenings.

Good quality pool tables in the back (you can always get a good game of challenge pool here), and always crowded with both expats & holiday-makers, it’s comfortable for singles and couples. If you are single and looking to find companionship you will usually find another single at Gulliver's who will be looking for you too, although it might cost you a few hundred Baht.

The menu is extensive but a little pricey for the quality, but not bad. Other downers include a terrible sound system and the service is prone to falling apart when it is busy. The management have also been very rude when dealing with a cock-up on their part.

They do have free internet terminals and the bouncers are always around so it's generally a nice safe environment to chill out at.

    Hanrahan's
    Sukhumvit Soi 4

    Phone: 02 632 7515

    Website

Hanrahan's Irish Pub is a purpose built 'Oirish' Pub located in the lively night life street of Sukhumvit Soi 4, a short walk from Nana BTS station, where you will find a mix of ex-pats and tourists alike.

Pub Opening hours start from 9 AM with last orders called at 1 AM in the morning. Extended hours are offered for certain local and international holidays or special occasions. The Restaurant serves food from 10 AM and will take orders all the way up until 11 PM at night.

One thing that strikes nearly every visitor is that the place is devoid of the most important thing to a successful pub; atmosphere. The air-con is also set to 'freeze' so bring a jumper or a coat. It does keep the beer cold though.

This place is an alternative to Gulliver's to watch the footy on a Saturday night though, as it doesn't attract lots of Chelsea or Man U scumbags. It doesn't attract lots of any group of people, so you can be fairly certain of getting a seat before kick-off.

One last moan; considering this is supposed to be a purpose built pub, why on earth are the toilets upstairs? Completely stupid.

Do not come here if you are elderly or disabled.

    Huntsman Pub
    Basement of The Landmark Hotel

    Phone: 02 254 0404

    Website

This large and lively pub is a split-level establishment with a big central bar, dance floor, stage and booths along the walls, which are lined with English county maps, coats-of-arms and other British collectibles. The Huntsman's Filipino house band can be heard cranking out all the latest pop hits daily from 9.00pm to 12.45am. The usual range of alcohol is available, with pitchers of fresh draft beer probably the best bargain. The menu offers great British pub favourites like Shepherd's Pie.

Most locals only venture here during happy hour (before 7pm) to make the most of the 2 for 1 promotion, which puts the price of drinks down to 'affordable' from 'extortionate', but this is part of an international hotel, so many folks who drink here won't know any better, especially if they hadn't actually dared to leave the hotel during their stay. If there is still anyone left at 9pm, they will probably soon leave when the band fires up and it becomes impossible to talk without shouting.

The biggest draw used to be their Sunday buffet roast, which was pretty reasonably priced and contained a good selection of traditional fayre. Recently, the price has rocketed to 650 Baht ++, so it will probably only appeal to visitors staying at the hotel or those with fat wallets.

    Jool's
    Sukhumvit Soi 4

    Phone: 02 252 6413

    Website

In a corner of Bangkok, there is a place that will be forever England. It seems that Jool's Bar has been around forever, but it's only been there since 1995. Previous owners have grown reputations bigger perhaps than the bar itself; can the present owners live up to the reputations of the previous incumbents?

Of course, you get the usual range of beers both draught and bottled. The quality of the food is pretty good, and provides a welcome change for anyone missing honest British cuisine in Thailand. No fewer than four traditional roasts are available on a daily basis (choose from chicken, pork, beef or lamb), all served with at least two kinds of potato and Yorkshire pudding. Other British staples include cottage pie, gammon and eggs, traditional fish-and-chips "a la Bognor Regis" according to the menu, great soups and one of the best British breakfasts in town. Keep an eye on the specials board for more British favourites.

    The Pickled Liver
    Sukhumvit Soi 11/1

    Phone: 02 254 3484

    Website

A 'homely' pub with well-worn floors, dark wood furniture and beams, the Pickled Liver could have been transported from a village in England (remember that scene in An American Werewolf in London ?) or just the Bull's Head up on Soi 33/1.

The walls are decorated with shirts, scarves and banners from the English football league, and televisions relay football matches and other sports. There is an extensive menu including bangers and mash, pies, baked potatoes, roasts, snacks, and a range of Thai food. Kilkenny, Guinness, Heineken and Chang are all on draft as well as wines, cocktails, spirits, and soft drinks. The place is lively on Thursday evening, also known around here as "Quiz Night", and for live football matches.

    Soi 8 Bar
    Sukhumvit Soi 8

    Phone: 02 653 3144

    Website

Soi 8 Pub & Restaurant may not have one of the best names for a bar in Bangkok, but it more than makes up for that by the venue itself. Affable Kiwi Dave has made this place a real success with good food, a good atmosphere and decent prices.

Another attraction is that it is a good place to watch the sport on TV. Rugby and cricket take precedence over football, so there are less wankers around.

Dave has recently extended the pub which is good news as its popularity means that getting a seat can be pretty difficult in the evenings.

    ** Update 25/01/11
I visited the Soi 8 Pub last week and the Midget and I both had an early lunch there. It was terrible. I had a lamb pie that tasted like it had been deep-fried and it was only served with chips; no salad or veges. The Midget's Thai style salad was also poor and suffered from whoever prepared it being too lazy to cut the onion up properly. Out of 3 waitresses there, only one didn't look like she wanted to strap a bomb-belt to her waist and take the 5 customer to Hades with her. That's the last time I'll be going there.

    ASOKE

    The Black Swan
on Sukhumvit, near Soi 14 (Asoke BTS)

    Phone: 02 229 4542

    Website

When the Black Swan opened a few years ago it set a new standard for pub food & drink in Bangkok. The food is amongst the best of its type in the capital, all freshly prepared on the premises and the draught beer is well looked after; the landlord, David, cleaning the pipes every couple of days, as opposed to every couple of weeks that you'll find is the standard at nearly every other establishment in Bangkok. And yes, it does make a difference, especially in this climate!

When you first walk into the pub it takes a few seconds for your eyes to adjust to the softly lit, double height room, but once acclimatised it makes for a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere. Regulars tend to head straight for the bar while casual visitors tend to appreciate a seat by the window and watch the world scuttle by outside.

Upon reading the menu, you may at first be put off by the higher than average prices, but the quality of food and the size of the portions just about justify the extra cost. If you are feeling a bit tight, I recommend one of their sandwiches; a meal in their own right. Once comfortable with some food inside you and a pint on the table it is easy to while away most of the day here, and if you find funds running low, there's a few ATMs just up the escalator at the BTS station.

    Bradman's Sports Bistro
    Sukhumvit Soi 23

    Phone: 02 661 7176

    Website

Formerly known as the Downunder Sports Bistro, Bradman's has quickly jostled it's way towards the top of the pile for sports bars in Bangkok. Although it mainly panders to antipodean types it does show Premiership football as well. The menu is large enough to include a good selection of Aussie pub favourites as well as some Thai staples.

The management here has a very clear direction which allows you to watch whatever sport you prefer in comfort with good tucker, commentary at correct levels and no hassle from young ladies trying to pick you up. This formula is obviously successful as can be seen from the decent crowds that regularly frequent the place, especially when there's sport on. If your favourite sport doesn't seem to be on, just ask at the bar. The staff (and owners) are very approachable and will go out of their way to keep their customers happy.

    The Crossbar Pub
    Sukhumvit Soi 23

    Phone: 02 664 3399

    Website

    The Old Dutch
    Sukhumvit Soi 23

OK, this isn’t very British either, but it is getting more so, now that it’s owned by one of my countrymen. Always popular with tourists getting up courage before they dip their toes into the seedy underworld of Soi Cowboy, it often gets full. They’ve updated the menu to include a better approximation of an English breakfast, but the food prices have increased, too.

    The Ship Inn
    Sukhumvit Soi 23

This is another small shop house bar, but this time near to The Soi, rather than The Plaza. The last time I visited the staff were pretty useless and needed prodding with a stick before they got their noses out of whatever exotic culinary delight from Isaan they happened to be eating. The menu features all the usual British pub fayre, but be warned, despite what the menu says, everything is either fried or microwaved. So if you order grilled fish, it will be fried. If you order pies, they will be soggy. The last time I ate there the food had taken a stunning dive in my estimation, to the point where I can't eat here any more. Even the breakfast has been ruined because I can't help worrying why the sausages taste like they've been soaked in vinegar. As is often the case with smaller bars, the beer is locally brewed.

    PHROM PHONG

    The Bull's Head
    Sukhumvit Soi 33/1

    Phone: 02 259 4444

    Website

The Bull's Head is one of the longest established pubs in Bangkok and is still a favourite amongst the expat community as well as being welcoming to anyone who pops in for food or drink. Billy is the affable manager and despite being a Spurs supporter, does a great job of making sure everyone is happy. The staff are attentive and work well in a relaxed, friendly manner.

The Bull's Head has a good selection of draught beers. As well as the standard fare of Heineken and Tiger, the Bull's Head also serves up Guinness, Kilkenny and Strongbow. Bottled beers include Singha, Chang, Kloster, Tiger, Corona and Miller.
Their menu is pretty good, including a good range of pub food as well as Thai. The food is above average for a pub and you can dine either downstairs in the bar area or upstairs on the mezzanine level.

The Bull's Head has a number of special events throughout the week. On Monday there is a 2 for 1 offer on draught Tiger. On Thursday is the Bull's Head Accumulator evening, where patrons can win up to ฿18,000. Friday sees the Heineken 'Wheel of Fortune' between 3pm & 7pm followed by 'Open the Box' offering the chance to win ฿30,000. Sunday has the ever popular 'Toss the Boss' where you can get your round in free on the toss of a coin. The Bull's Head is also home to the Punchline Comedy Club.

    The Dubliner
Corner of Sukhumvit & Washington Square

The Dubliner is a full on Oirish Pub that has been around for a while now. It boasts three floors – two for eating and drinking and one for pool & darts. They have Irish bands playing live downstairs (which gets on my nerves, as I can’t stand it) sometimes and show live sport on the big screen TV. The menu is excellent, but a tad pricey.

    The Londoner
    Sukhumvit Soi 33

    Phone: 02 261 0238

    Website

The Londoner has been around for over 10 years and is well established as a popular pub by many expats as well as some of the more well heeled locals. What makes the Londoner unique for a pub of this type is the fact it brews its own beers; a pilsner and a bitter. The staff are generally alert and do a good job, especially during major sporting events, when the Londoner tends to get packed out. When it's not so full it can come across as a bit cold and uninviting.

Not the best selection selection of draught beers, but it's worth visiting to try the London 33 Pilsner or the Londoner's Cream Pride Bitter. The bitter has a good hoppy taste, but is a bit gassy for a bitter. It also seems to lack body after drinking the nitro-beers served elsewhere. Also available is Guinness (฿220). Bottled beers include Warsteiner, Erdinger, Corona, Fraziskanar and Tetley's in cans.

Their menu has a substantial range of western food with some Thai favourites. Most items on the menu are very well done, but there is a debate raging as to whether the Cornish pasty is excellent or nasty. You'll have to make your own mind up on that one. Whatever you decide to eat, make sure you have plenty of cash to hand, as the Londoner can be expensive if you don't choose wisely. There is also a pool table and a dart board here.

The Londoner has two 'Happy Hours' every night, from 16.00 to 19.00 & from 23.00 to 01.00. Wednesday is 2 for 1 night and on Sunday is the carvery for ฿470. Twice a month on Tuesdays there is a quiz night and there is live music on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

    The Robin Hood
    Sukhumvit Soi 33/1

    Phone: 02 662 3390

The Robin Hood opened on 2004 and has quickly established itself as a popular pub, due to its good location and its popular 'Happy Nights'. There are always plenty of staff even though all but one seem to spend 90% of the time either congregating around the till or looking outside. This has been a problem since day one, and doesn't look likely to being solved any time soon. Don't bother complaining to the owner, as he only cares about taking your money.

The Robin Hood has a good selection of draught beers, including Guinness (฿200), John Smith's (฿180), Kilkenny (฿220) and Strongbow (฿240) as well as the usual Tiger and Heineken. Bottled beers include Paulaner, Newcastle Brown Ale, VB, Asahi, Singha, Chang, Tiger, and Corona. Also available is Bulmer's Cider. Their menu is pretty standard, and not particularly expansive. The food is pretty bland, but a plate of chips whilst watching the footy is OK.

The best features of the Robin Hood are the large screen TV showing a range of sports, but dominated by Premiership Football, and the aforementioned 'Happy Nights'.

    SILOM

    The Barbican
    Soi Thaniya, Silom

The Barbican is not like most other generic British bars in that it doesn’t try to pretend that it’s old and made from old English oak. The décor is both warm and modern, especially the lower seating area, which is great for watching the comings and goings outside the Japanese bars opposite. It attracts a good mix of ex-pats and well to do locals, who enjoy the excellent menu and good selection of beers.

    Bobby's Arms
    Silom Soi 4

Well, the new Bobby's is surprisingly an even more depressing place than the old one.

The bar is above Cafe De Paris and for those who need other references its opposite Cleopatras gogo bar. One problem is that, if you blink, you will miss the entrance as the stairs up are towards the back of CDP and the tables and chairs camouflage the route.

Bobby will really need to do something to make everyone more aware of where it is and change the entrance to get more folk in, otherwise it will continue to have the atmosphere of the Marie Celeste. -- Thanks to Bluffer

    British Club
    Silom Soi 18

    Website

If you’re a chap with a bored missus and a couple of hyperactive kids, the monthly membership would be well worth it. Situated in a private compound just off Silom Road, the British Club really is an oasis of calm in the chaos of Bangkok. For the active there are tennis courts, squash courts, a swimming pool and a rugby team. For the not so active there are snooker tables and a golf club. There is a posh restaurant that also does ‘proper’ curry buffets and a nice bar with a good range of beers on tap.

    The Duke of Wellington [CLOSED]
Silom (opposite side to Patpong under the United Centre Building)

The The Duke of Wellington is one of the new additions to the British pub scene. It claims to have the coldest beer in Bangkok, which is good as the colder it is, the less taste it has. The staff seem reasonably competent, but the place is a bit soulless when compared to somewhere like The Bull's Head. I didn't try the food, so I cannae tell if it is any good or not.

    Jameson's
    Silom

    Website

    The good:

Nice pool tables, clean toilets, looks like a good selection of sport to watch. Good happy hours and a few good food specials. Pool tables are in good condition.

    The bad:

Poor service - takes a while to get a drink and I had to go to the bar to order my food. Small serving sizes for quite expensive prices. Dish descriptions are not actually what arrive at your table.

    The ugly:

    MeMock

Will i go again? Yes, for a beer at happy hour but not for a meal. -- Thanks to MeMock

    Molly Malone's
    Soi Convent

Once again, it’s another generic Oirish pub. I think this is the fourth name for this place after Delaney’s, Shenanigans & The Irish Exchange. If I remember correctly, they're removed the lethal iron, spiral staircase that would take half your head off if were not looking where were going after one too many. The menu is OK, but you have to select your vegetables separately, and this adds to the price (as does the VAT and service charge). The breakfast for 300฿ (plus VAT & whatever else they feel like) is bloody good though. It gets pretty busy in here, so the place does get quite lively. Much better than O’Reilly’s over the other side of Silom, I reckon.

    O’Reilly’s
    Corner of Soi Thaniya, Silom

O’Reilly’s is probably the most ‘plastic’ of the Irish pubs in Bangkok and I had my first pint of Malaysian Guinness here. The clientèle seems to be made of tourists seeking to escape the heat and pollution for a while before heading back out. The menu is pretty good though and not too pricey (if I remember correctly). The beer garden is nicely situated out on the polluted street, but now and again the occasional foolhardy person can be seen there. The service can sometimes be a bit ‘hit and miss’.

    Roadhouse
Corner of Suriwongse & Rama IV

    Phone: 02 236 8010

    Website

The Roadhouse BBQ Smokehouse & Grill is a purpose built place a stone's throw away from the Sala Deng BTS and Papong. It specialises in good grillhouse style pub food and freezing cold beer. There are three floors; the ground floor being a pub/restaurant, the first floor a restaurant and the top floor a lively bar area with pool tables and lots of TVs to watch the sport on.

There is live music on after the early diners nearly every night and they make an effort to accommodate most sports where possible. The bar manager is English, so you might have a struggle to watch the rugby over the poofball.

    OTHER AREAS

    Mulligans
    133 Khao San Road

    Phone: 02 282 6157

Khao San Road has been going through a much needed upgrade over the last few years and is no longer the scruffy hole catering solely to scruffier backpackers. For sure, the scruffy backpackers still exist, but there are also large groups of trendy Thais as well as 'normal' westerners who like to chill out on the street. Much of this change can be accredited to the Buddy Group who were one of the first to offer good quality accommodation in the area as well as offering more than the usual 'open restaurant with a crap movie format' so loved by most of the other operators in the area.

Originally this bar was Thai run and not very successful, so the management did the sensible thing and got a western manager to sort things out. Now, they've got rid of the western guy, so it may well be a shambles again let's hope not.

    Witch's Tavern
    Soi Thonglor, between sois 8 & 10

    Website

This place is one of the oldest British style pubs in Bangkok (apparently). It used to sport lovely Chesterfield sofas in the reasonably sized ground floor area. Then, a few years ago, they refitted it, placing a huge oval bar in the centre and replacing the Chesterfields with less memorable seating. The Witch's Tavern’s main draw is the excellent music that features every night. They also provide decent, but pricey food and Guinness & Kilkenny. Saturday night sees a decent sized crowd of regulars, and Wednesday night is ladies’ night, which gets pretty busy, as there are lots of idiots trying to pull all the oversized western female teachers.

** Need to add Gulliver's & the Shamrock on Khao San Road; Bobby's Arms (Erawan); Tawan Dang (Rama III); Crossbar Pub (info) & Bully's (Nana).

Two weeks ago my wife and I and two friends from Pattaya dropped in on The Robin Hood pub and restuarant on Sukhumvit, Bangkok. We ordered three glasses of Heinekin and a soft drink, and then later one more Heinekin.

Sometime later I was handed a bill for five Heinekins and the soft drink. It was a simple order. Naturally, I immediately querried the bill with the waitress, who went away and returned with a corrected receipt without so much as word, or an apology or any eye contact whatsoever. She simply put the book on the table and walked away. Naturally, we didn't leave a tip and vowed never to return to this establishment again.

Also, we were seated for about ten minutes before I could get the attention of a member of staff to serve us.

Have any other members been "accidentally" short-changed here?

Thats real easy, the bits you have read before are the old bits, the stuff you haven't read yet are the new bits, do you have this problem with news papers aswell

Bobby's Arms was on Silom Soi 4, but it has moved to Patpong 2 (above Cafe de Paris).

I don't go to Silom much, so it may be a while before I pop in there and check it out. If anyone else has an opinion of the new place (or any other pubs for that matter), feel free to post them here.

well I went to the Bull's Head the other day - boring as fuck , only about 5 people in there - I just sat on my own in a corner with my 130B pint of Tiger .

Anyone go to Wong's in Soi Sri Bumphen? (or Kenny's bar a bit further down) ?
