Bobbys Arms - Erawan Centre
My only experiences with Bobby's Arms have been
1) Seeing the long queues for the fish and chips at the Ploenchit Fair
2) Reading reviews of the Patpong location here and on other forums. Hence i have never visited.
3) Once trying the short lived Sukhumvit 23 location. Went in for some food and was informed that they had not yet gotten around to hiring a cook. so crossed the place off my list.
Wel ltoday I was down around chidlom at lunchtime and feeling peckish decided to give the newish Erawan Centre location i try.
It could wel go the way of the soi 23 location if y experience is anything to go by.
Recently i visited the robin hood on sukhumvit and could find no serving staff behind or in front of the bar.
Well at Bobby'sa rms it was no problem. Ther were only the two servers in the place. Zero customers and at 12.30 on a business day. Not a good sign.
It didn't help that most of the other food outlets in the basemnent of the Centre appeared to be close to full.
Bobbys Arms- Erawan is quite small. A small bar olus 8 tables inside with a pool table in the middle of the room which would if they had a lot of customers would be a [roblem as it would interfere with 4 of the tables.
There are also a nuber of tables outside.
The bar looks a lot like a pub inside a 5 star hotel - cetainly no spit and sawdust to be found unluke my impressions of the Patpong operation.
Everything appeared new.
Music (dire as it was) was provided by a Bang & Olufsen 5 (maybes more )CD changer behind the bar and there is also small tv on the wall.
No warm publike atmosphere.
They have John Smiths and Singha on tap. I can not remember the prices as due to last nights excess i was on the sprites. I was there for the food.
They have a small menu mabe a dozen items. nothing special in my view.
I had the fish and chips ( memories of the Ploenchit Fair and with no queue) at 185 baht.
I thought the portion to be small when it came but upon completion it was adequate for lunch.
Just the fish a few chips tartare sauce and a wedge of lime.
Fish was chunky and as good a replica of english fish shop fish as i have had in a while. Nice and white with a light crispy batter coating. It was a bit watery though. The chips were unexceptional but acceptable.
Service was fiine, although i had to ask for salt. They brought everything else over without being asked but left out the salt. Perhaps looking after my health as i tend to overuse it. i also think that they were happy to practice their technique on an actual customer.Nobody else entered while i was there.
Certainly wouldnt become my local. meal was fine byt farang food is expensive.
Actually I still prefer the f&C at Busstop.
Perhaps i went on a bad day but my viis thas done nothing to make me want to visit the Patpong head office and I wont be standing a 100 deep to order the f&c at this years Ploenchit Fair
Back in the late 80's and early 90's Bobby's Arms was a wonderful spot: good food, great live music, funky location.
I continued to go back for a long time after it seemed to fade into a shadow of it's former self. But, as Troubled says, no need to bother any more.
Nice review Mr T.
I was in the Robin Hood earlier. There is only one girl who seems to work there. A smiley young thing with short hair. I did ask her why no one else was working and she just gave me a diplomatic smile. Anyhow, I managed to keep myself down to only 5 guinnesses tonight as I'm off to Hua Hin in the morning.
Thanks. My pleasure
Enjoy Hua Hin but I suggest that you avoid the food in Crawfords Irish Bar.
I was in there election weekend and i thought it was horrible but nicely presented.
Personally i would go for looks gross but tastes great.
didnt try the drinks as it was only 10.30 in the morning - a bit early for me but it didnt top 3 guys from being drunk already.
I seem to reacll that they were notmuch different to Bangkok prices.
This obvious lack of inforamtion and recall prevented me from a review at the time
I didn't go to Crawford's or the sister bar in Hua Hin (I can't remember the name), but we met up with Dougal at the Hilton. I shall post some piccies later.Originally Posted by Troubled
I think the best burger I've ever had in Thailand was at Crawford's in Hua Hin. And, the fish and chips at the branch in Cha Am was also just fine.
In Hua Hin, I like "UNO". The one which is not far from where PB's place. It's great! Service is nice and food is great, cheap too!

Can you mark the updated ones please?
Jeez!
The Toby Jug not being there anymore & The Robin Hood's special offers nights. Also, the Dubliner now sells Bass.
Now how would I know that unless you told me.
Not that I actually live in BKK or go out drinking there or even frequent British style pubs.
I know what ones have been updated now.
Keep up the good work.
I went to Bullys on tuesday night for the first time - nice and big, cool, expensive beer (i had a pint of john brown or smith or whatever its called for 195 baht) Would go again.
Tried the (something)frog in Suk soi 7 for lunch, ordered roast lamb, but alas it was reheated from Frozen roast lamb. Pretty ordinary fare really, edible but only because I paid 350 Baht for it. I don't know why they bother really. Its not hard to do a decent roast with roast tatties etc but this was pretty awful, tuff as hell. no roast veg's and insipid washy sort of gravy. back to jools, or Dubliner for my roasts in future.
