That's why I said I wasn't sure what the word meant.

Still do not understand the word punter.

However, this place does sound like a good place to stop by.

The Brits seem to have a lot of secret words and ways of speaking that they keep from us. I think they learn a lot of them in public (meaning private) school. (They pronounce school as "skool" even though they pronounce schedule as "shedule".) Don't get me started on rhyming slang or words like Worcestershire.

The usage of the word seems to have been broadened over the years. My earliest recollection is of it being used to describe people who place bets with bookmakers, typically on horse races. It was an acceptable word even used on the BBC weekend horse racing programmes.

Later, I was aware of it being used in a slightly derogatory way to describe the customers of prostitutes. In a sense, they were gambling that they would get value for money and not something that needed medical attention.

Later still, I heard it used to describe customers of a large business. They were perceived as people who bought, in that example, a service contract, hoping to get something in return for there outlay. The provider, of course, would be looking for a different result, as would the bookmaker and pimp.

So, I guess a punter is someone who pays for something to a business or individual hoping to get value for his money.

There is another use. On the River Cam in Cambridge, England, there is a kind of boat that look a bit like a flattened canoe. It's propelled by a guy in a straw hat using a long pole. His passengers pay for this experience and often take a picnic and champagne and get lashed. Some go so far as to dress in Edwardian costumes. The boat is a punt and the guy with the pole is punting. The scene is so bizarre that a local poet penned a piece entitled, 'Watching the Stunts of the ****s in the Punts'.

    I hope that helps.

as for it being for sale...most businesses are for sale at a price so there's no surprise there...

you're a mine of info regarding your little corner of the world BH and your threads are always worth clicking on...unfortunately I find little that interests me on TD at the moment...too much dross from KW and his whores...

Punter=customer, in particular of a prostitute

so the use for this joint could have been a clever hint, but was unintentional I think.

Thanks KM, I wondered where you were. I'm a bit weary of the drivel myself, but I keep on posting photos of flowers and food!

Paul (Sport & Cocktail Bar) actually announced a few months back that he and Jiab wanted to return to Jomtien next year and that the bar was for sale. He said he's done all he can with it and expects his gross this year to be quite a bit below last year's take due mainly to the economic downturn and rise in the baht. Still, he's got at least one guy actively interested in buying.

^No, you're right. I was also curious about this, but didn't feel comfortable asking. So, I don't know if the ex has moved on, changed, or what.

Just caught up with this thread.

I've been in the 'Irish' Bar several times and agree with BH (as I did on another thread), that its a nice place. Don't know what's Irish about it, though?

I've never seen many people in there, early or late, apart from as said, when US military are in town. When staying at the Sima Thani in April, the Thai air force and military were staying and some ventured into the pub, followed by the ladies....

As for the burger and chips at the Sports bar? It was fine, frozen burger cooked okay that even I could manage to do. The chips were like doorsteps, half potato, half chip. The missus wasn't keen, but I was.

When looking at developments around town, I mentioned to an English guy I talked to that I had been to the bar and I was then asked if I had the chips and what I thought of them? Seem to be a hot topic! Such is life in Korat I guess?

Paul was a great host and explained that he felt he'd achieved as much as he could at the bar. There were only two other customers in that night.

Hey BH, I like the development where you live and the area, you could have had me as a future neighbour!!!

But tell me, do you know anything about the barber shop place around the corner from the Irish bar facing the hotel? When previously there, I could see it from my bedroom window and people were sitting outside drinking, went to have a look and there was some drinking inside as well. Never did bother to find out more?

    Link?
My understanding of the term. I missed the original meaning relating to gambling (I don't) but others have explained it.

Anna, the owner of the "Barber Shop" is the person who now operates the Irish Bar. She's had the barber shop for a long time. It was originally in the Sima Thani. Many of the girls who work at the bar were formerly at the barber shop. I know you can get your hair cut there and have a beer. I'm not sure what else is on tap....

That might explain why it appears busier than the bar!

Forgot to answer this. The bar was built by an Irish guy with a Thai wife. I think he intended it to be income for her after he passed on. Sadly, he contracted lung cancer while the bar was being built and died soon after it opened. (This is all before my arrival in Korat). She tried to operate it after his death, but didn't get on with the farang customers. Eventually it closed opening only when the troops were in town.

In 2006 she reopened it and hired a manager. That went no where. Anna leased the place out at the beginning of 2007 and seems to be making a good go of it.

I'm planning to go there one night this week. I'll take some photos and start a different thread.

    where did it go?

Kinda funny....I posted to this string a couple times and they both disappeared. Maybe because I was talking trash to that peterpan entity? Me being a newbie and not living on this forum fulltime, maybe I am not entitled to publish my opinion? I see my posts in the newbie section are still there.
