    Kanchanaburi: Krua Lung Ratt Restaurant

Late April is a busy time in Kanchanaburi mainly due to the ANZAC ceremony (ANZAC day) and footy match. This year we were lucky enough that it pissed down rain late in the month and for the Kerrs this means frogs and lots of them. When it comes to eating the suckers there is only one place to go - “Krua Lung Ratt” restaurant in Kanchanaburi.

^ Fried frogs for lunch at Krua Lung Ratt, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand

The restaurant “Krua Lung Ratt” is well known but not so easy to find as it’s about 15 km south of central township of Kanchanaburi. They specialise in fried frog and an assortment of other critters that aren’t so easy to find in Bangkok. Depending on the season you’ll find wild venison, birds, rabbit, and porcupine. They do a mean fish cake also.

^ You’ll find the joint about 15 km south of the main township of Kanchanaburi. When coming from Bangkok it is on the other side of the road but the owner has sorted out some good u-turn places within 200m of the restaurant. Sunday afternoon the joint is full with all the Bangkokians going home after their dirty weekends and in addition to the food it aint a bad spot to enjoy a bit of eye candy.

^ We were there during a quiet spell but the joint has some nice big tables for an afternoon drinking session if that tickles your fancy

^ The specialty … fried frogs dipped in a spot of fish sauce and dried garlic

^ Lung Ratt (aka uncle Lart) also does the best fish cakes I’ve ever come across

^ Small meal of about 8 frogs, half a dozen fish cakes, some lovely venison, a plate of wild boar curry, and 3 or 4 big beers set us back 700 baht … can’t beat that country hospitality

^ Wayne Jnr loves the suckers

^ The English sign has been taken out the back. Not sure if it is because the transliteration is so bad or if they are so busy with Thai customers that they can’t be arsed with the tourists anymore. Either way worth checking out should you have a spare hour or two up there some day.

Might be because you have to pay tax to display an english sign but not for a thai one

I have tried frog in LOS and it has always looked and tasted like crap.

What you had there looks delicious.
Does it taste the same as the french stuff ?

Have had similar experiences, especially when they chop the little ones up and do them pad kapow style, all bones, spice, and no taste.

Never tried the french ones but these are the delish. Melt in your mouth and very sweet. Just deep fry with the skin on, then dry them, they gently fry in a spot of fish sauce and dip in dried garlic. This is the only place I've come across that does them like this. Would love to hear about a similar place.

Very similar to how I had them in Phnom Penh. Tasted good, but too much fucking around for my liking.
