I used to go to the Madrid bar, in about the mid 90s

Quite Ok hamburgers and friendly girls

I got a good reputation there at one time. I was asked by one of the girls for a lottery number, so gave her one (as they say). She went out and could not find it so bought something similar. My number came up!! thereafter, they all seemed to think that I could give them the winning number, so i was popular for a while.

eventually, I got pissed off with a couple of the girls behaviour and complained to the mamasan. She did nothing so I haven't been back, and not missed it either
    I have reported your post

My first port of call and when I arrived in Bangkok all those years ago.

Had a pepper steak (which was superb) and afterwards fell right into the depths of Patpong's nightlife.

Lot of history within those walls and I wonder if Baron Bonk still has his breakfast there and on his way home from his nightly forays.

Great memories Chitown and thanks for the thread.

Excellent thread and a fine example of cross cultural exchange without any unpleasantness.

I am quite partial to those sausage patties and am looking forward to visiting this bar.

But what is " white gravy " ?

I can never get my head around the concept of "Merican" sausage patties thing !
A sausage is a length of pigs intestine stuffed with all the bits swept off the abbatoir floor and mixed with sawdust and breadcrumbs.
Patties are sort of the same but taken out of the skins - compressed into a flat lump of poo ( Probably by being squashed in the cooks armpit) and served with deep fried mashed potatoes and a couple of eggs!

Cant complain cos I like them but for goodness sake get the terminology right !

On the other hand Mr E.G. introduced me to something called "Shit on a Shingle"
Now thats nice ! Had some yesterday !!! (at Dons if you are reading this E.G)

After cooking the meat in a frying pan. Add a knob of butter, salt, pepper and milk/cream and a little flour to the drippings. Bring to a boil to thicken. Viola, white gravy.

Say hello to Don for me the next time your in his place. How is his deli coming? Originally thought that the move would be disastrous as the new facility just wasn't conducive to mingling like the old store. There was something funky about those cement tables and benches that brought a certain sense of painful co-existence to all the customers..

I just discovered he has a processing plant here in Bangers, will have to check it out.

Shit, now your bringing back long lost memories. Being raised by depression era parents brought lots of money saving ideas to the dinner table. With four younguns meals were well planned.. lol Salmon wiggle, tuna pea wiggle. etc. etc. lots of white gravies.

One can of salmon, some gravy and a pack of Saltines fed a whole family... the "good" ole days.

    Thank you for that.

A "white sauce" would have made more sense. Perhaps a little wine or brandy to deglaze the pan before adding the other ingredients might lift it. The flour is probably unnecessary and could be substituted by more reduction.

Not sure where the large violin comes into it but ta anyway.

I've been enjoying Don's hot sauce, Jalapeno hot sauce and Chipotle sauce recently. I presume it is the same guy?

Not sure but presume so. Don is known for his Tex-Mex sauces among other things. An interesting guy for those that don't know him, a retired NASA engineer I believe, been here for dogs ages.

I wish I had my camera last night!

I was at the Madrid and have to report that they have the best onion rings I have ever had, Light, fluffy and made from scratch. I also had a cheeseburger and fries which was a B+. They only have that HOT Pommy mustard so bring a bottle of Frenches yourself.

I've been eating there for more than 30 years. The food is great when you want a change from Thai. I knew Khun Jack well, as well as Mom and her daughters. Also knew Jimmy the Belgian years ago before he moved to Pattaya. I know my picture is on the wall, as well as my wife's. Great ham hock and bean soup - with cornbread. Yum. Going to be one of my first stops when I get back in six more days.

I am curious. What is the story with girls in there? Do they just sit with farangs and make money off the drinks bought for them? I saw many rubbing their guy's neck and shoulders. I thought they were a couple and then the farang got up gave them the sawadee and split. There is a very attractive 50 year old women in there as well. Seems to have taken care of herself and has been working there since I first went there. Even Mrs. Chi noticed that she looked good for here age.
