    Challenge to Starbucks

The Hamburglar has his eye on the Grande Mocha Latte.

McDonald's (MCD, news, msgs) will install coffee bars with baristas -- experts in preparing coffee drinks -- at nearly all of its 14,000 restaurants in the U.S., The Wall Street Journal reported.

The move is part of the fast-food chain's continued effort to challenge Starbucks' (SBUX, news, msgs) dominance in the coffee market.

Investors warmed up to the idea: Shares of McDonald's were up 92 cents, or 1.6%, to $57.97. Starbucks shares were up 60 cents, or 3.3%, to $18.71 by midday.

More broadly, stocks were drifting by midday. Stocks plunged Friday on a weak jobs report that caused investors to worry about the possibility of a recession.

So the Starbuck's shares gained twice as much per cent as McDonald's. Speaks volumes.

Starbuck's has a reputation for quality at a price. McDonald's has a reputation for being cheap and cheerful. I won't be drinking Ronald MochaDonald's.

I thought it had a reputation for producing bland, tasteless shite and overcharging the customer for it?

^ I think they are a bloody joke, the coffee is nothing special, at home in the Gold Coast there are at least a dozen places producing way better coffee, my favorite Zaffaras, a small local franchise of a few shops. superb coffee at 2/3 Starbucks prices and you don't have to suffer all the tossers that seems to congregate at SB.

One thing that surprised me about Starbucks Thailand is that it didn't offer any Thai coffee other than in a pack to take home. I would have thought that Starbucks which is supposed to be interested in helping the world would at least have a local brew on its menu! I know most Thai coffee is crap but it's the point of it.

Thai coffee is actually pretty good. Nothing sold in Starbucks can hold a candle to it anyway.

I've had some excellent, rich Thai coffee. I've never had a good cup of coffee in Starbucks.

Therefore the only reasonable conclusion is that American coffee is shite and Americans know nothing about a good cup of coffee.

MtD Starbucks sells coffee from all around the world, including America, Africa and South-east Asia. If they don't stock Thai coffee then there is a commercial reason. People don't want to drink the stuff.

I suppose they fuck it up on purpose to cater for the bland US market then.

I can't seriously believe that you think Starbucks sells good coffee. That's like saying Chang is a quality beer or that Mr Bush is a good president.

Cuppa day here at most and the only time I go to Starbucks is with an invite, but must say the hilltribe coffee I picked up in Mae Sot is pretty damn good.

    MTD,

Americans sell the coffee but I'm not awhere that they make/grow the coffee. They do roast the coffee. The best coffee beans come from the Blue Mountains of Jamiaca without question! This is due to thier geographical location and soil quality for this plant aswell as the ideal elevation and climate. Everything else is second choice. Not to say that second choice is bad but just preference. IMHO people that do not have choice in selection tend to settle and I think this is the case in many areas of the world.
