Kentucky Fried Chicken - Halal. Are You Bothered?

The Thais I know love their KFC. In a mostly Buddhist country sales of the product are maximised by ensuring that all chicked served in the takeaways is compliant with halal standards. There is no stunning of the animals prior to slaughter. The UK is an example of a country which is generally in favour of stunning animals and a famous supermarket chain, TESCO, proudly advertises its chicken as being slaughtered humanely.

Do members here have any views? Does anybody here avoid KFC because of this? Does it matter ?

I eat it and my only complaint is that it is a rarity to find a KFC outlet which could be described as "fast food".

We kill chickens by wringing their necks. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Family kids love KFC and so do I. They get to eat it every couple of months or so as a treat. Good to see them so happy.

I think that wringing a chicken's neck was the accepted way before factory factory came into being. The PC brigade protest against anything and everything now and I wondered if farangs avoided KFC because of the way chickens were slaughtered. My wife used to kill lots of things, chickens, fish, etc. when she was younger but now cannot bring herself to kill spiders or bugs. The "road to enlightenment" ?

^ I used to kill rabbits I caught ferretting but know that I couldn't any more. Same for chickens. I can still knock a fish on the head but sometimes find myself letting nice ones go back.

I do appreciate that eating meat makes you as culpable for the animal's death as the guy who slaughtered it, but I still
avoid meat labelled as Halal, if possible. It's not the killing of the animal I object to but I think the least we can do is slaughter them as humanely as possible.

^ I have to say that when guests bring live ducks to a bbq, BIL has to slit their throats and agitate them out of view. Similarly, cows are killed before dawn when the kids are still asleep.

Halal is a religious requirement, the 'humane' aspect is that it must be killed by a human, not a machine, and drained of blood.

I don't eat KFC but with all the frying and however many herbs and spices I'd be surprised if there were any taste left to hide

Having visited many slaughter houses including Chicken works. They use to place the chickens in upside down "cones" with their neck and head protruding. Their throats were slit as the chain of cones passed by a rotating blade. Others used electric shock.
Their is currently controversy in Australia about pork abbatoirs where secret film by animal rights activists has been leaked. It shows the pigs being lowered in cages into carbon dioxide, The images show that the pigs dont go peacefully to sleep as suggested. In the end there is no nice way to kill. Pigs have a high degree of intelligence and to suggest they dont know what is happening to them is highly doubtful.

I have been in kosher meat works where they also drain the blood for both beef and chicken (obviously no pork). Whilst all abbatoirs do not smell exactly pleasant Kosher abbattoirs hit the pits smell wise. I have been told by people that have eaten kosher meat, draining the blood does detract from the taste.
Coronial services and mortuaries can be far worse depending on the time between death and refrigeration.
Maybe the reason I totally lost my sense of smell years ago. My brain took the preferred option of shutting down my olfactory nerve.
On the upside Lady Cow can quietly drop depth charges all day safe in the knowledge I am none the wiser and I can honestly say hand on heart, my Sh@t doesnt stink.

There shouldn't be any taste difference . . . if anything it should taste better, hence the 'hung' and 'aged' meat being classified as better. Can't say I ever tasted the difference when I ate meat.

The cheapest and worst fast food chain there is IMO.

I've never understood the SE Asian fascination with it when the fried chicken for sale on the roadside in Malaysia, Thailand etc is far superior.

Go to Korea - where the fried chicken is the best in the world - and you never hear it mentioned.

Perhaps it's the "KFC experience" or the idea of eating "western food" that sells it? It sure aint the quality of the food.

A mate of mine was a commercial pig farmer before he lost the farm to a divorce. he got back into it in a small way, buying 6 or so live pigs from the auction yards ,stick tthem.in the trailer. Take them home, feed them on spuds that cast him a carton of piss at the time. Plus bread out of date for free. Come butchering time he would sneak up on the unsuspecting grunter and lay a mighty blow to it skull with the flat end of an axe( which are fucking thick).this would stun the pig , then he would slit its throat. Seemed to be a good system. Then the pig would be popped in his mobile freezer and end up as as lechon baboy for mostly filipino customers. They usually wanted all the entrails as well to do there thang. He made good money out of it , and the flippers swore that it was indeed as good as in the philippines. He was also lucky that he lived in the middle of a vineyard so no pesky complainers around

"Bled" beef tends to take on a more greyish colour and is a furphy anyway. Research shows meat bled out still contains about 10% blood although what you see in the bottom of packaged meat is mostly a combination of water and meat proteins (sometimes refered to as purge) The term hung and aged are generally interchangeable as the meat (generally beef) is aged by hanging in a coldroom at 2°C and around 85% to 90% RH anywhere between 3 days (lean carcass minimal fat) up to 10 days (carcass with good fat covering). Aging while allowing the meat to tenderise can also affect the taste, colour and smell for the worse if not carefully monitored. In some countries ageing in vacuum packs has become popular although it must be well sealed to prevent aerobic microbial growth.
In the old days (pre WW2) a good butcher wouldn't sell meat until he could push his finger through the side of the carcass.

Missus is very adept at killing our chickens old school Isan style. Grab em by the head a with a sort of whip like twist of the wrist, job done. Every bit is consumed leaving only the beak and tonails toenails as evidence of the chickens existence.

KFC here in the US is total shit. The only people that eat there are white trash. Plenty of better places if you want fried chicken, but I rarely eat it. Sushi, a good steak or a burger would be higher on my list.

^ Be that as it may, the average isan village diet is barely enough to sustain most kids. A trip to KFC every couple of months with a bucket of chicken between four is a great treat. I get the leftovers, along with the dogs.
We're not talking every week, just an occasional treat.

In the states it’s Popeyes all the way every day. Here in Thailand the KFC, Mickey Ds, Burger King stuff is mostly just pit stop food when transiting back and forth between Patters and Taphan Hin. Too many Mom & Pop type expat places to try in Pattaya over the fast food stuff. I’d rather eat a chicken kebab from the Jomtien Night Market than KFC. Even fried chicken, sticky rice and fried chicken from that night market sounds better than KFC.

It's weird to me how so many people claim the chicken on the street in Thailand is better than KFC. Like do you really think these people selling chicken on the street are picking better quality chicken? Or maybe they have a great recipe passed down..?

^ the marinade is ideal for masking old chicken. An old lady i used to know used to buy chicken meat condemned for pet food at 1/4 the price of fresh and peddled it out as grilled chook - i've never touched the stuff in over 10 years since.
