    Eathai

...a food court (I'm sure I started a thread on this place some time ago) on the Central Embassy ground floor...well-prepared Thai offerings in this upmarket street food location: omelet over rice with river prawns, nom tuk moo with pigeon flower rice, tom yom gung fried rice, calamari and somtam. Washed down with a sort of coconut juice smoothie and generous pours of a Chilean red...we're here at least once a month...

Tom, finally I dined at one of the places you frequent

Memories was an upmarket food court without being pretentious.

Great food at a reasonable price.

I agree it's a good place. Eaten there and a few of the japanese restaurants on the 4th floor. All very good.

I do have a comment for TC... Geeezzuuus you sure order a helluva a lot of food everywhere you go.

So basically you're saying Lunch was the appetizer ...

Sadly though, the dinner will look the same just move the plates around.

When living in Bangkok, why would you eat Thai food in a poncey overpriced gaff located in a shopping mall?

It's one of those places in the world where the best food is found on the street. And seriously good food too.

    Madness.

...1) effective a/c, 2) drinkable red wine available, 3) high quality victuals and visible preparation, 4) noticeable lack of mangy dogs, dishes soaking in gray water, annoying insects, noise and air pollution, and fewer folks blowing snot, chicken bones and other detritus onto the sidewalk and 5) I long ago got over the tourist delight of eating on the street...the enjoyment of the meal in a comfortable environment is my main priority...that this combo happens to occur in mall doesn't bother me at all: I stopped being a tourist years ago...

What tourists eat on the street, apart from the fuckwits on Khao San with their pad thai?

That said, if you're equating what the local people eat with tourist junk, that's why you're paying three times as much for inferior food in a fucking shopping mall.

Mate, I've seen your pictures and eaten enough substandard muck over the years with pretentious Thais to know what's what.

That really solely depends on where one eats and what they eat. I honestly prefer the food courts in business centers for my eats. It has always been good and fair pricing.

I do agree that many mall restaurants are significantly over priced but to TCs point, you are paying for all the creature comforts. I seldom eat off street carts anymore. The novelty wore off years back. Maybe Roti or fried bananas

I prefer good food, myself. And to that end, almost undisputably in Thailand, it's to be found in the husband and wife gaffs at the end of your soi or even the lunchtime khao gaeng stalls and noodle carts.

You can keep your A/C and 250 baht bills for a pad krapow with a bit of lettuce on the side.

Indeed. In Lampang area there are loads of outstanding small family restaurants that I eat at on and off. Of course I am a bit spoiled as my wife is an incredible cook so I eat at home.

Downtown BKK it's all about convenience and everything is overpriced for what it is. At the All Season business towers there is a food court that is incredibly clean, outstanding food and has a huge variety. With my wife back North I eat there frequently. It's like Mom and Pop businesses all in one location.

...quite a contradiction: omniscient yet ignorantly opinionated...

...yep...we eat at roadside food stalls when convenient or we know of a particularly good chicken rice hole-in-the-wall (literally), but don't feel the need to demonstrate a man-of-the-people arrogance...

One thing I do struggle with in BKK is all the "fusion" Thai crap that some western twat chef wanted to put his name on it. It is so terribly over priced for what it is. Presentation is picture worthy no doubt. Of course it is geared at foreigners staying in 5 star hotels or business dinners. I have been to 2 dozen or more business dinners at various restaurants with attendees of 6 to 9 people and dinner bills ranged from 18,000 bht to 35,000 bht. What makes this so bad is the food is utter bland crap. I rifle through the menu and let others chose and then pick at it. If I had my way, I take them to some off the beaten path joint where we could enjoy great food for about 4,000 to 6,000 bht for a large group
