    Shinsen Fish Market

...on Sukumvit soi 39, near Petchburi Rd....as portions tended to be small, we ordered 6 dishes. To start, local mussels in white wine sauce, tuna tartare and battered, deep-fried calamari...local mussels don 't have the flavor or succulence of the New Zealand imports, but the sauce was nice. The tuna was topped with sea urchin splooge and salmon eggs: interesting flavors...the batter on the squid was nearly impenetrable; I'm sure fellow diners wondered if we were crunching down on crab shells. We continued with scallop maki sushi and grilled snowfish with a miso sauce. Except for the topping of black caviar the sushi was nearly flavorless while I don't think snowfish needs a sauce at all...and certainly not miso-based. The last item was the best: two huge grilled river prawns with a squeeze of lemon...excellent. To celebrate Songkran, we tried two desserts: tofu blancmange with sweet vanilla sauce and "wafu" vanilla parfait. Neither one was worth a spoonful...to drink we had a fresh lime and soda and draft Sapporo beer. Better prepared for our second visit, we plan to order one of the enormous fresh king crabs in several tanks on one side of the restaurant...they offer an extensive variety of sake, a selection of beer (including local craft beer) and wine. I imagine this would be a congenial place for Japanese businessmen to come for drinks and fresh seafood after work...

...^agree that both items (bread and chips) were disappointing...I can only assume that the Japanese manager was infected with Thainess...
