Let me guess, coming soon will be steak and ale pie with awful looking "chips", a couple of awful onion rings and some awful looking orangey-yellow dipping sauce in a small blue or white pot - served on a blue plate.

read "the fry-up inspectors" review of a weatherspoons breakfast.

I wasn't planning on a fry up inspection but had planned on reviewing the bacon sub and coffee for £2 at Subway . As soon as I discovered Subway on Magdalen Street was halal and didn't serve bacon a back up plan was needed. As I passed The Glasshouse on Wensum Street I decided it was time to review Wetherspoons again...

I quite like Whetherspoons as an honest pub with reasonable food and affordable prices.
Recently been to the UK and visited so many pub / restaurants that have transformed themselves into pretentious, arty-farty soulless places that will serve essentially fish n chips with tarter sauce "drizzled" over something that looks like Damien Hirst thought it up, at over 20 quid a plate. c/w jaw dropping drinks prices also.
Everyone seems to have been watching "Masterchef", and thinking they're going to become Michelin-starred millionaires overnight. Whetherspoons is okay in my book.

That's how I see it. Most standard Brit pub grub leaves a lot to be desired, and the menu's all look the same to me- frankly the food probably comes out of the same packets anyway. Cheap n cheerful is the bulk of the pub market really.
You do of course have a number of gastropubs, and some owner operated places not quite at the 'gastro' level that just do good, home cooked grub. But they don't compete on price with the likes of Witherspoons, and neither should they.

Wins kudos from me- I was one of the early members of CAMRA, in the 80's. I'm no expert on 'spoons of course, having only been to the 'fire station' in Swindon- but for an el cheapo pub I was impressed by the range of ales they offered.

Wonder if everyone realises that that orange stuff in the little pot is actually the "cheese". Grooogh! And they overcook the rubbery steak in your local branch, too. Wondered if it was just ours...

Yes, Mr K. It isn't fine dining but it fills a hole.

I do think Weatherspoons is getting a bit of an unfair rap in this thread, yes the food is shit but if you compare it to what would its competitors also offer up as in a meal for about £5 it's no better or worse than the alternatives and basically you are getting what you pay for. You don't go to Weatherspoons for fine dining but for cheap drinks and the selection they offer which is where they smash their competitors and why the pubs are busy.

Wetherspoons isn't getting a bad rap. Their food is.

You said the food is crap. Are you being unfair about their food?

There is no argument that their food is generally crap although for the price I once had a steak that I couldn't really complain about, but my point is just concentrating on how crap their food is takes away from the positives that Weatherspoons offers, such as supporting local micro brewers and selling their beer which as far as I'm aware or certainly never noticed none of the other chains do this, also their drinks prices which is their main selling point and if it wasn't for Weatherspoons all other bars would be charging a lot higher prices than they currently do. I haven't been into my local Spoons for a good 6 months but a pint of John Smiths or Carling was £2 then and I doubt that's changed much, there in lies the attraction.

OK. Fair enough. I don't tend to go into pubs to eat so I doubt I'll ever eat any 'Spoons' grub.

For the big chain pubs agreed as they all basically have the same menu and it's all shit, but as Sabang said there are some great gastro pubs around which have more imaginative menus and the food is all freshly cooked some even staffed by z list tv celebrity chefs, difference being you'll be paying £20-£30 for a meal but worth it as opposed to £5 in Spoons for shit. So don't write off going into pubs to eat just be selective.

Are they big peas or a small pie Sommers?

I won't make any crude jokes about the pie looking like a bell-end neither...this is a thread for the whole family to enjoy, so must keep it clean.

I am in the pro 'Spoons camp BTW.
