    The chips look awful. The all day breakfast looks OK - apart from the chips. Everything else ...... looks like I won't be venturing into a Wetherspoons any time soon. Thanks for the heads-up, Slap.

    Looks like Mr Somtam -Ticked off every single item - slap
    has been economical with the truth and
    has been going for the ''healthy'' options and studiously avoiding the dog.

    On my last visit, this dish was particularly popular with the Wetherspoons clientele .
    Introducing the ''Gourmet hot dog ''

    It appears to be a foot long monster, that would not be out of place in some - Mississippi road-stop diner in a ''finish it and it's free'' eating challenge offer .

    Looks a tad dry to me , but I guess it being Wetherspoons no one would bat an eye if you simply dunked it in the Guinness.

    I walked into a pub one day and asked for a hot dog.The waitress went out the back and came back with a plate and took a half a bun from under each armpit.

    I asked her "why are the buns were under your arms?"

    She said " I am just keeping them warm "

    I've only ever been to one Witherspoons, in Swindon- it used to be the fire station. It's quite alright. The beer is cheap and several choices, the food common or garden pub grub as you would expect, it ain't that bad. Certainly ain't that good either- but I wasn't there for the banquet. Not the food banquet, anyway.

    I think it's fashionable in the UK to slag off Witherspoons because of it's success. So they must be doing something right.

    well, it is certainly a good business model, but it lowers standards rather than raises them and by promoting food of undoubtedly poor quality it does nothing to improve the appallingly low standards of taste that seem to exist on high street britain these days.

    i doubt if the french, italian or german public would patronise restaurants that served up such dross, even if it did seem like good value.

    Blimey, prices have ballooned (alongside the punters no doubt) massively since 4/5 years ago. Back then a beer and a burger were 1.99

    Obviously I only knew this as I passed by the signs in my Jag on the way from my penthouse to City Airport to eat sushi of naked young minxes in the VVVIP lounge.

    Right , I would rather be indoors, than chatting to some Boreing drunk in Weatherspoons, Teakdoor is so much more intellectual than English pub talk, commoners the lot of them.

    Working away in London last year me and a workmate went to the Edgeware Rd/Marble Arch 'Spoons for a feed for lack of any other pub we could find in the immediate vicinity, and the burger I had was literally fucking inedible. I'm no fussy eater and I was starving after a days work but after two pints I literally wanted to throw up it was that bloody awful.

    Balham eh, them black tarts have found easier takings in Croydon instead of standing in the cold on Streatham Hill, my how they have moved up market.
    Was the Mini cab fare worth it.

    ^I don't know London that well mate so you've lost me a bit there tbh! They were a pair of white birds, we ended up on the train to Balham and then in a taxi to their place. We'd had some MDMA at the gig so that may have played a part in that decision.

    Next day I just woke up and got the fuck outta there to make my way back to Victoria, feeling like utter shit. Just left my mate there.

    I poked my head in the room he was in and said "I'm off, now. You coming?" Him: "Urgggh, now? Not yet...". Me: "See ya later then mate!"

    Yeah, it was well worth it, top night! Much better than just getting the coach home.

    They were better a few years ago. Food was edible, then.

    One of the reasons for their success was opening up the British pub to a larger clientele and longer opening hours.

    The standards of service, product and cleanliness of the offering was enough to entice women, without their "handlers", into them. They also enticed older people for their food and other beverages.

    Yes the food fits the price point, the clientel accept it and many go to the Curry Night, the Steak Night etc. Many of course go for the low priced beers. Some to get out of their bedsit and get warm.

    To say that they lowered the standards is 180 deg. off compared to the old pubs they have replaced. Tim and John and the others, threw their grenade at a dying industry and have, along with their copy cat ex employees, rejuvenated the Pub trade - the old tied house system was crap.

    Problems exist as always but the landlords are a strict as any other pub on over drinking.

    Wetherspoons gets knocked like any sucessful British industry, some people can't handle a success story.

    The UK high-street is not the place for gourmet food. Look elsewhere for that. It is readily available, but not in the same price bracket.
    A tray full of GOLD is not worth a moment in time.

    ^ But they don't need to. Home cooked food can be cheaper and better than that, and in some places, food in small cafes is better and cheaper than that. It's a lifestyle choice. Up to them, of course. Each to their own, but I'd have to be desperate to eat that stuff everyday.

    That doesn't mean they will stop, not be pressurised into going inside by their friends, want to join their mates in a nights "socialising" or go somewhere to forget todays mistakes at the office.

    Sontam only eats it everyday to absorb some of his liquid intake. his main attraction is the alcoho; gm / £ ratio and the "personal" acquaintances he befriends.

    Wetherspoons business model is not the beer/food sales, that's the visible numbers measured, It's the city centre, real estate empire, it is allowing it's shareholders to invest in. Generally they purchase the freehold of the properties they buy.

    There is no difference in the quality of food Weatherspoons serve (as in shit)compared to all the other massive pub chains, in fact they basically all have the same menu, but where Weatherspoons wins is the price of drinks and the selection of them and if it wasn't for Weatherspoons we'd all be paying a lot more for our drinks in all bars. Plus one thing Weatherspoons does that others don't is they support local micro breweries and will sell their beer, so good if you're an ale fan.
