Thread: Ingredients in thai food that you don`t like.

Apart from Plaa Rah, that is....

1) For me it is coconut milk. I find it sickening sweet and nauseous.

2) I don`t like peanuts in my Tam Thai papaya salat and I don`t like cashew nut in cashew nut dishes...

3) Sugar. The extensive use of sugar or sugar cane extracts in dishes really puts me off too.

Phat Phak Plioaw Waan, sweet and sour veggies.
This dish is not sweet and sour, it is sweet to the extent that I would rather have a lollipop or two.

I dislike salty food as well, but I never found that was a problem in Thailand only in my country of origin.

chickpeas or whatever those little round things are in green curries.

^^ Isaan eggplant, apparently- but nothing like any eggplant I know. For a start, they grow on trees (ew grow them). Not real fond of 'em either, but I'll have them.
Pla rah is about the only Thai ingredient I outright reject.
Don't get the Thai habit of adding sugar to noodle soups either, but that is simply avoided- I just don't add it. Other dishes, you get no choice- they add it anyway, during cooking. A lady around here does a lovely pad ka phao, save for one thing- too bloody sweet, cloyingly so. Easily handled though- got the wife to have a word in her ear "no sugar for the f'rang, please". Sorted.

I hate that gritty rice powder they put in larb.

Fish sauce and chillis

Kapi. Stinky stuff.

I'm fairly much down with all of it, not fond of dried fish though.

Forget what it's called but that aniseed tasting stuff that the misses puts in some noodle soups, apart from that eat pretty much anything, actually eat that too just prefer not too.

Yeah, me neither.

When you purchase a dried Plaa Mor, giant gurami, fry it on a pan in oil, your entire place will smell like a morgue with no cooling installed..

Anything that smells of fish.

I came to say bamboo too, leave the foul stuff for the pandas.

Technically, the Isaan/Thai variety of what is referred to as eggplant doesn't really belong to the family of nightshade, but a sub-species of cultivar mostly native to SE Asia and regions of South Asia. มะเขือเปราะ

Nothing close to a chickpea.
A "pea aubergine" is a distant cousin of the makhuea phuang.

Not a legume, rhizome, etc - but a vegetable.
