They have had a lot more cheap stuff recently, which is all I buy here. These are all at 279-299 a bottle, but they don't always have them all. Berri estates is probably the best and all better than that Mont Clair muck

This is lovely...
I'm sure that the quality and selection will vary from one Lotus and Big C locales to the next - as all these supershops carry differing Farang items.
The Belleville was quite good the last time I had it. Had it with duck in a cherry sauce
You should turn those cheap wines into spritzers. Less calories, rehydrating, plus they don't taste of vinegar

^If you were at a party and offered one would you turn one down Jeff ?
While we're on the subject, if at this party you woke up on the sofa with a hangover, sore arse and man jam all over your back, would you tell anyone ?
If not, it's my birthday in a few weeks

Thais seem to like champagne. It must be the bubbles.
On one of my first visits to Thailand, I took a young sweet Thai lady and my driver to a restaurant where all the waiters were on roller skates. You went into a building where you picked out what you wanted cooked and then proceeded to a table on the water.
I asked the waiter what kind of wine they had and she included Mateus in the list, so I immediately asked for a bottle. I can't remember the cost, but we wound up drinking 3 bottles.
Great night, great memories and some good wine.
Err, that stuff in wine boxes priced at up to 500 - 700 bt for 3 and even 4 litres ain't wine. Indeed, the bottled variety at 299 bt is similarly not wine as one may know it. It is ersatz stuff mixed with god knows what so- called fruit juices and bottled here in Thailand so as to circumvent the wine duty levied on the real stuff.
Ghastly and utterly bogus.
Bottom line, if you ain't paying at least 450 bt a bottle it ain't wine. The Mont Clair stuff is shipped over in tanks and bottled in Thailand. Some of it is drinkable but their cheapest belongs to that bogus category.
Carrefour had some wines that were drinkable before they were taken over by Big-C. I haven't seen anything semi-decent since, which is all the more reason for popping into Laos from time to time.

Q. How does Thailand rank internationally in terms of its wine taxation? Is that likely to change anytime soon?
A. Number 1 in the world and unlikely to change for various reasons, none of which has anything to do with generating tax revenue or curbing the consumption.
Q. How widespread is wine smuggling?
A. Wine smuggling is massive, systematic, organized and well ingrained.
