    Which Coffee Machine?

The FreshPrincess would like a coffee machine for her New Years gift so I thought I'd consult the TD experts.

What coffee machines do you guys use and how much?

    Here's the one she's asked for -

    SO4 Trend - 6750bt with 32 coffee capsules.

    PROMOTION - stefancafe 231013

The problems I can see are:

    - Your limited to using the coffee they sell.
    - If the shop goes bust your fucked.
    - When you run out of capsules you'll never use it again because your too lazy to get more capsules.

I reckon a coffee machine with a grinder would be better.

    Any recommendations?

Bought one of those fairly spendy German coffee makers from the Emporium 3 months ago and it's gone tits-up already. Element burnt out so the missus picked up a cheapy from Mega Bangna the other day - an Electrolux. Seems OK so far. Gets the water real hot so the coffee brews better.

Coffee machines such as in pic are a pain in the ass.
I now use a simple perker. Cheap and works good. I also hava a coffee grinder if I want to grind my own. Seldom use it. Can get good dark roast even here in the sticks.

I go through filter machines by smashing the glass jugs.

capsule machines help contain any mess from coffee grounds but you are tied to that manufacturer

put any brand of ground coffee in it - we would bring back different varieties from around the world - but I think the Illy in the vacuum tin is my preferred

I have a lavazza ,which uses capsules, in my office which is ok as the company pays for all the gear.

Filter machines make decent Americano type drinks and even produce a better result with instant coffee than the kettle and cup method.

For a range of coffee drink types, get a home espresso machine with a portahead, milk steamer and hot water tap. They need to be serviced occasionally so buy from a source such as Boncafe who will do that for you. There are many internet websites that show you how to make decent coffee with these machines.

I recommend buying beans rather than ground coffee. The latter loses its quality very quickly - you aim to get a crema on top of the drink. When that's not there, the grounds are too old. You would need to buy a grinder, of course.

Whether you buy beans or ground, look for 100% robusta. Arabica is inferior.

Which one, how much and where from?

I actually started the thread after not knowing anything about hot and cold blenders so I was hoping for your input.

I hate those things where you have to buy coffee capsules, then you're stuck having to buy the capsules and at the mercy of the company.
    This is all you need.
Then you can pick and choose your coffee brand and get it pretty much anywhere.

    I'll look tomorrow.

    Feck!

I just popped into Robinsons to see what they are selling and they got even more expensive.

They had ones like this for 12k (& a chrome version at 14k)

Whats the flavour difference between one like above and the drip one like below?

Cheers BB, I just went down to Starbucks and they pulled out a bigger 35k model, wankers.

But that little one looks like it could work, do you know if it takes ground coffee as well as those little capsules?

Girls seem to love these capsule machines. I would never buy into that sort of system. Coffee should be freshly ground from beans just before you brew it. I just use a plunger jug but I might get a 12 bar pump soon.

I've seen ground coffee versions at Starbucks - each branch has a slightly different display... I'm not sure what that particular one does, sorry.

This one makes delicious coffee every time and never breaks. You can put 2 spoons per cup and have it strong or you can do 1 and have it "American" style. Buy nice beans, keep them in the freezer get a grinder and make them fresh daily. The cost for both should be less than 1500,

You dont need a fancy grinder, you can use or herbs and spices as well.

Hoity Toity and not as nice as billed. We had one in the last two hotels we stayed in. Both gave lukewarm coffee something I cant take.

If you want the espressos and lattes this is the machine you probably want. But one cup by one cup. If I stumbled upon fifteen thousand baht I might get one. But my first cup would always be out of the machine at the top. On a day off the second cup as an espresso would be nice.

If I had that money I would get a barbecue though.

I'd have a long weekend with Emma, she could brew me up a 3 in 1...

    (You know I'm joking, right?)

I've seen a decent assortment at Starbucks Central Rama 2, they also have a lot of coffee machines at the powerbuy end, and, I think at least 1 specialized coffee shop that has a variety of machines. At this time of year, they also have a lot of displays on the ground floor - should be some coffee machines there too. Plus, if you go by yourself for a butcher's, FP, loads of decent totti at Central Rama 2...

the simple plunger method is by far the best.

    wiki on robusta
A coffee press, sometimes called a French press or plunger pot, is often hailed by coffee enthusiasts as the best method for brewing coffee. A coffee press is one of the few brewing methods that allows all the natural oils and proteins in the grounds to be present in the final cup. Many drinkers also hold the press to be an exceptionally pure brewing method, as it uses no paper filter that could alter the taste of the finished brew. Learning how to make coffee with a coffee press is, in many ways, even simpler than using the automatic drip machines that are so ubiquitous today.

Whether you buy beans or ground, look for 100% robusta. Arabica is inferior.

Approximately 40% of the coffee produced in the world is robusta.[5] It is mostly grown in Vietnam, where French colonists introduced it in the late 19th century, though it is also grown in Africa and Brazil, where it is often called conilon.[6][7] In recent years, Vietnam, which produces mostly robusta, has surpassed Brazil, India, and Indonesia to become the world's single largest exporter of robusta coffee. Brazil is still the biggest producer of coffee in the world, producing one-third of the world's coffee, though 80% of that is C. arabica.[8]
Robusta is easier to care for and has a greater crop yield than the other major species of coffee, C. arabica, so is cheaper to produce.[9] Roasted robusta beans produce a strong, full-bodied coffee with a distinctive earthy flavour, but usually with more bitterness than arabica due to its pyrazine content.[10][11] Since arabica beans are believed to have smoother taste with less acidity and a richer flavour, they are often considered superior, while the harsher robusta beans are mostly used as a filler in lower-grade coffee blends.[12][13] However, the powerful flavour can be desirable in a blend to give it perceived "strength" and "finish", noticeably in Italian coffee culture. Good-quality robusta beans are used in traditional Italian espresso blends, to provide a full-bodied taste and a better foam head (known as crema).[14][15]
