Horsemeat: Up to 70,000 horses unaccounted for in Ireland

    Published on Monday 11 February 2013 20:21

There are an estimated 70,000 horses unaccounted for in Ireland, Labour claimed today as the Government sought to allay fears that contaminated meat was being sold in British supermarkets.
Shadow environment secretary Mary Creagh said unwanted horses were given false paperwork in Northern Ireland before being sold for 10 euro (£8) and then resold to dealers for meat for as much as 500 euro (£423). She said there was currently a “lucrative” trade in horses, claiming that while the Polish and Romanians were being “conveniently” blamed for the scandal, the contamination problem had started across the Irish Sea.
Speaking in the Commons, Ms Creagh said: “The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have clear evidence of an illegal trade of unfit horses from Ireland to the UK for meat, with horses being re-passported to meet demands for horse meat in mainland Europe.
“It says that there are currently 70,000 horses unaccounted for in Northern Ireland. Unwanted horses are being sold for 10 euro and being sold on for meat for 500 euro - a lucrative trade.
“It is very convenient to blame the Poles and the Romanians but so far neither country have found any problems with their beef abattoirs.”

What did you think to it?

I unknowingly tried some in a "mutton" curry in Luang Prabang once. It was actually okay.

I then knowingly ordered some 'leg of' in Phnom Penh. Nah. Never again.

But this processed shite does taste worse...

Yes, I have, and some of the products (e.g. salami) were among the most tasty I ever had.

We ate Horse Meat Roasts on our farm on Vancouver island ... just for a chculinary change. It needs to be done at least "medium" to break down the tougher, stringier meat structure. It's has less fat than Beef. There was a Horse Meat Butcher shop on Hastings St in Vancouver for many years. Not sure if it is still there. If shopping in LOS, remember that Mua (long rising tone)=Horse & Mua (short dropping tone)=Dog. I never have eaten dog, but a Buyer used to come down our Soi in Issan about 1X per month, with his mic cranked up shouting Mua, Mua. He'd buy dogs of any size or condition. I always told him to help himself to all the dogs in the neighbourhood. The Boogers barked all night long and then the Cockerals took over around 3:30 am. I finally gave up and cleared out, partially due to those damn alarm clocks ... much to my TGF's financial distress.

Yes in a brown restaurant in Les Halles (Paris) when it was a market.
I have a tin of Asda corned "beef" made in France, should have been recalled. Going on Ebay soon.
    Muauauauauauauauauhhhhhhhhhh.

    Previous tin tasted fine.

People are all getting in a tizz about eating horse.

What about those cute little lambs gamboling around the meadows who shall probably end up on the table on Sunday?

Horse steaks are yummy, tender and don't have as much fat in them as beef.

I met a guy years ago who would weep over carrots, and the pain they must go through being ripped from the ground. Get a life...

Ate a cheval steak in Paris in a rather nice peppercorn sauce. Very tender and quite lean. It's more expensive than beef.

Never ate horse and don`t really care to.

I have ate duck though which is about as far out I`ll go in tasting animals. I`ve been offered to taste dog in Korea, but I refrained. Just the thought turned my stomach.
