    Weeds and Weedkiller

For the past few weeks, I have been spraying the gradually increasing grass and weed growth with the weedkiller "Roundup"

Normally, the weeds start to whither within a week and are dead to the root within a fortnight.

Recently, they have decided not to die!

I put this down to the possibility of "tolerance" to the chemicals, as I heard this can happen from a friend.

I normally spray early mornings or early evenings, when the sun is not really that bright, and I only have one bottle of Roundup on the go at any one time, I do however have a number of empty containers that I hang on to as an old guy from the village often pops around and I let him have them as he fashions them into traps for shrimp.

Today, I finally found out why the roundup has been innefective, I found a second bottle - it was half full, almost 2 litres, then I found my original bottle half full, almost two litres!!!

The bottle of Roundup I have been using has been left in the sun, and it is damn hot up here at the moment.

But when I took the lid off, there was this God awful stench, it appears that for the past two weeks I have been spraying the weeds with a concentration of 10% Roundup and 90% urine!

The bastard boy has been pissing in the Roundup bottles!

Luckily he is staying at a friends house tonight...TWAT!

and to boot, it looks like some bastard has stolen one of the dogs, the half breed idiot Dalmatian, hopefully they took it because they love animals, and not for the fact that it may have stolen someon'e baby pig, which I found in a severe stage of decomposition on our land yesterday.

We have already been warned that its days were numbered after it went on a chicken eating spree down the road... stupid bloody dog!

The last one I had, so I was told ended up being stolen and cooked as Gaeng Om...what can you do, I can't tie them up all day, the idiots have 20 rai to run around on and they go stealing baby pigs and chickens!

If it isn't back by tomorrow, I fear the worst.

    MM,

speading the stuff in the morning and evening is good. Now, to maximize potency, you want to apply it when the *grasses* are in full growth. The most efficient way is :
    - cut them short
    - water them generously
    - wait 2-3 days
    - now that everything grows vigourously, apply the roundup.

This method will increase the speed at which the product reaches the roots of the plants, thus its effiiency. Also helps spreadins on ALL the plants, as some of them would naturally tend to be hidden by other plants folliage.

alternatvely, apply during raining season, making sure the stuff stays at least a few hours on the plants before being wash out by a downpour. When it's super hot like now, plants dont grow that much, and product not so efficient

Now, get your other dog, and make sure he chews the balls from the other bastard.

Check the expiry date of the poison to see if it's past it's effectiveness date IE "use before". Thais are known to not give a fcuk about this date.

Where do you buy round up in Thailand, I have only been able to find the stuff that burns off the tops but does nothing to the root?

For the information of anyone who wants to get rid of weeds, for instance sake in areas you dont want to do massive area spray a can of WD40 does the job perfectly and it sounds like it is cheaper then the Roundup product.

Sounds like your having an entertaining time on the 20 rai..farming, i have always thought as a real good belly chuckle. If ya carnt have a laugh at farming or "trying" to be a land husband, then life really isnt for you..
Keep pluging away and laughing..It's all good fun at the end of the day.
With "Round up" TM, we always used a bit of normal dish washing liquid in the brew.
Old farmer next door swore by it.. he never used to piss in it.. He did however belive that if you want to grow really great dope, piss around the plants, or better still, he explained, get the missus to piss around them and make sure you get a photo.
It all helps with the laughing aspect of farming he told me with sincerity.
"Hurry up,, get out in the paddock and start having a great laugh"

Not the best idea as it could be washed off with a shower within minutes. The solotion is absorbed by the leave, so in theory if it is dry quicker absorbtion will take place through the leaves.

Agreed here in the UK you can get a 'round up' 2 or 3 litres for £15 (1500 baht), and it is not all that strong. The real good stuff you can only buy if you have a chemical licence and that is £110 (5500baht) and has to be substantually watered down, and it bloody effective.

I know it's what it would seem, but the real process is a bit more complex :
    - the product gets inside the leaves through tiny pores (like with human skin), and these pores will shut themselves when weather too dry/hot, to prevent too much evaporation. Thus, product penetrates better when they are open (=moist in the air)
    - the facility and speed at which product travels inside the plant to reach the roots is in diret relation with the growth rate of the plant (and the transportation of fluids within). Once more, this process slows down when too hot/dry, and therefore, efficiency of application similarly decreases.

It's why round-up is more efficient when applied early in morning, so i tcan penetrate the plant when moist in the air is still relatively higher than later on in the day, and then travel through the plant fast while the temperature increases and the plant's metabolism accelerates. This is true untill a certain heat/dryness threshold for the reasons stated above.

Rain sometimes comes at regular times of the day during raining season, making it possible to apply product accordingly. This might be different in the south, where rain is more frequent, I have little experience of southern weather.

    Cheers
    ST
