Thread: Ornamental Fish Question

Hoping for some garden/fish advice. I have several water pots around my house, obviously great breeding places for dengue mosquitoes. So I want to get some small fish to put into the pots to eat the larvae, and also because they look nice too.

But I know bugger all about fish, size of pots, will I need to aerate them? They have small plants in them. Type of fish? Number? food? Sun or shade?

I've seen plenty of small pots in Thailand with fish living in them - usually around the river, or in wats. how do they do it?

These are the pots;

1st and largest, out the front, semi shaded, plants growing in it and plenty of algae in the bottom of it. It's about a metre deep.



2nd is in the back - the cats often drink out of that one, even though I provide fresh water every day. Will that be a problem for the fish? This pot is roughly 30 cms deep.



and I suspect that this last one is too small for fish, but perhaps I'm wrong. I could always put a great fuckin Koi in there? couldnt i? It's only about 15 cms deep and about 40 cms across. It's also on a stand that has it about 2 foot off the ground.

You will lose a few to mynah birds and visits from small pond herons but they breed so fast you will probably not notice

yep and them fantails are sorta pretty, my missus breeds em to feed to her crazy oscars,and yea they,ll wipe out any rigglers

My son put Guppies and Simese fighting fish in the lily water pot. They all multiply like crazy. We do give them fish food. When we clean out the algae, lots of them get cleaned out too, and tossed into the pond. The water pot is quickly overpopulated again, and the process gets repeated. In the pond the Tilapia like the algae, and there are others who like these small fish.

KW, the easiest and cheapest way to get your fish is to get the GF's rice pot, with no rice of course, walk to the neighbor's house and scoop some fish out of their planter pot. They will never miss them as fast as they multiply.

That would be the ideal spot to put the Piranha, they would love it.

In principal a big NO NO to import or own Piranhas in East Asia .

Outside of a zoo if you have one you are liable to a HUGE fine - not sure how much but it would make your eyes water !!

How do you say Guppies in Thai? I need some and all my neighbours gates are locked tonight.
