Greeks put dill, oregano or lemon in everything, , If you can't grow dill.

^ That was in case Reg Dingle came to visit.

As I mentioned, I've found that in any areas without enough light nothing will grow (not even grass) and in the wet season these areas turn into muddy messes. Over the years we have gradually paved/concreted over such areas.

How about concreting over (as Stumpy mentioned) and have plenty of pot plants? Maybe a trellis for some orchids and a nice bench to sit on and read? This would give you something to do as well.

These plants seem to do well in the shade but I've no idea what they're called... the missus buys them small and then keeps separating off new shoots to re-pot. She reckons she'll make her fortune selling them but I don't think I'll be retiring just yet.

^mendip - those are Caladium plants, also known as angel wings, heart of Jesus or elephant ears plants. They are relatives of the taro plant and grow well in the shade. My mom has several taro plants. We use the shoots, leaves & roots for food - cooked with coconut milk.

Before you become overly impressed with my knowledge, I did use Google. I searched for "plant that looks like gabi but with red leaves" and I was directed to Caladium. "Gabi" is the Tagalog name for taro. I thought that your plants looked like taro, but with the red thingy. AFAIK they're not really high value plants.

Funny, I have a Dart board here and use it once every 3 or 4 months for a few minutes of fun. I actually use my Horseshoes more but boring playing by yourself. I tried to get some Thai folks to play it and all they said was how heavy the horseshoes are to throw....Typical...

As for concrete versus brick, I tend to go with brick more when I can. Problem with cement is you have to contend with the run off and where it goes plus it all starts to crack. With stones/brick the rain water just goes down the cracks. Plus cement as we all know takes maintenance or it gets that terrible looking black mold all over it ( especially in the shade) and you find your time is spent power washing it to keep it from taking over.

Funny picture Mendy. My wife has a bunch of those plants around our house. Money makers you say....LOL

BB, These big leaf plants do well in both early morning sun or shade all day. We planted these in the backside of our pool area by the sitting bench and they are doing very well. I started them in pots and then moved to the ground. I like Mendys suggestion of setting up an area to have a hammock or chair. Do you have a mosquito issue there? If so, just pull a bit of power along the wall in conduit and set up a nice fan.

Yea the paving idea is beginning to grow on me. The grass was doing great and when the rainy season was over it all died.
In the mean time the dogs walk there and then track mad all over the house.

A mirror is not a bad idea, Perhaps one of those big convex driveway mirrors .
The patch of garden in question has an east to west orientation, west being behind the wall.
The picture below was taken in the morning.

So, the wife's growing taro in pots as a money making scheme. I guess that unless we plant a couple of hundred rai I won't be retiring any time soon. I do wonder about my wife at times... but as usual I will keep my thoughts to myself and see what unfolds.

As Stumpy said, I think that paving rather than concreting is the way to go.

Here ya go... how about creating something like this... a nice lunch spot.

Not too shabby, I would say!

Although I think these orchids have survived despite my factotum, not because of him.

I kind of miss snow. The good thing about it in the area of Greece that I am going too , it only lasts long enough to have some fun in it, and wreck your car.
    Not necessarily in that order

Couple of ideas, we have two places in our garden with little sun. One is next to the car park where a car is normally parked. We built a metal trellis and put potted plants on it. The other is an area shaded by trees at the front of the house. We bought stones that hold plants and simply have a nice look. All the plants are thriving 6 months on.

    Very nice Mandip.
I just started playing with them. (the Orchids , get your mind out of the gutter)
I was wattering them every day and spraying them with a mist, trying to recreate the rain forest environment. Then against my better judgment i decided to Google "Orchid care" it said "Don't water them every day and don't mist them" LOL
They seem to be doing much better now.

I'm not sure there is one 'right' way. YouTube is full of conflicting advice.

I water mine every day in this dry weather, early morning so they'll dry in the daytime. I do mist the aerial roots, not the leaves or flowers. Probably I could take better care of them. I haven't lost any yet and several of them have flowered a second time.
