    Purchasing mature trees

    Hi all,
I have a house facing West and the sun belts in on the front porch in the afternoons. Makes it real hard to sit there and have a beer.
I may get blinds or an awning but am also thinking of getting one of those huge trees you see in some nurseries.
Has anyone ever bought one? How did it go?
I read somewhere that they're prone to disease.
    Cheers

Bought two big trees 10 years ago after the floods in Bangkok. Got them from a nursery up in Nakorn Naiyoke. Both are healthy and have had to be pruned back a number of times. Delivered by a big truck with a hoist on it. They had to move power lines to get them over my fences and under the power wires. A very good investment indeed.

Thanks for the reply Aging one.
Do you know what type of trees they are?
    Are they shady?

I bought a Tamarind tree today for 20,000bht.
Had it plonked in front of the house.
    We'll see how that goes.
Hoping for afternoon shade on the front porch.

Tamarind is fantastic for shade, but make sure it's not too close to your house.

    The roots are very invasive.

A biit late to tell him now, it’s not like he can move it again.

Nice one. Beers on you after the tree is settled in.

There is a huge tamarind tree on my dog walking route and despite the development going on lately it's been left alone.

I wonder if tamarind trees have some spiritual relenance to the Thais? The mature trees are certainly spectacular and they remind of the oaks back home.

You're such a nice guy in so many ways, willy.

If only I could be like you.

No really, it was just information.

It's good to be informed, and I could hardly have forewarned him, could I?

It was you being a dick.

Your matey ‘cheers buddy’ stuff, as a demonstration of how things should go, was quite funny though.

    Because you’re such a dick.

I don't think so. There was a massive old tamarind tree on my western boundary, on my neighbour's side, when I moved in. Great for shade. Then she cut it down for charcoal. B*tch.

I also read sometime back when I was looking at purchasing and planting a few mature trees for our place that Tamarind trees are pretty messy as well. Of course for the OP this information isn't going to help.
