    Turkey chicks?

Ok short story, brother in law took off for a few days, left his Turkeys and 3 chicks here, One chick died yesterday I can immagine from the wet and cold, They can go to inside the garage its open, but they just stay out in the rain, Today i find another chick that looks sick, so i bring inside and put in a box and warm up slowly with the wifes hairdryer.

The one that died yesterday was soaked wet when i found it dying, The other 2 including this one would go under the hens when i could see, This one looks likes its gasping for air as the other one did. its dry but cant stand and appears to gasp for air.

Me, first thought is bird flu.

Any ideas? Or what to do.

Mendip would be your man. He keeps chickens and has recently related a tale of a sick chick. Best of all, he is en route to Istanbul so we can look forward to learning more about Turkey chicks soon.

Chicks immune systems are undeveloped so catch all sorts of diseases.
In this case appears exposure and resultant illness. When rain and cold chicks must be kept in a coup.

If your BiL expects his chicks to survive better get them vaccinated.

Sadly whenever I've had sick chicks they have always eventually succumbed.

Chicks of this age need their mothers to look after them, to keep them warm and dry and tech them to feed. I don't think they have much chance after becoming soaked through, and as as Norton says, they'll have a very poorly developed immune system at this age.

But what would you vaccinate them against at that age? We vaccinate adult hens against fowl cholera, but if they have that they have no chance and the entire flock will probably die. Their problem is probably not an illness but just neglect.

The times ive brought inactive chicks into my home Ive found jamming a finger or two up their arse usually gets them moving.

Needless to say, it died, I asked him today when I took the hairdryer and little blanket(rag) back. Now he has made them a coop.??? he stuck an umbrella in the ground and dug a circular trench around it. I dont get it, I have a two car garage with one door always open and plenty of room, all he has to do is clear an area and lay some rice straw then shu them in at dusk.

Cheers old fella, edited to the correct spelling. I went downstairs and took a couple of pics. Have a laugh, thankfully we've had 2 clear days.

I'm going to tell ya now...the little ones just don't taste as good as the full grown ones. Try and keep them alive just a bit longer and you'll be rewarded with something that tastes like chicken, but doesn't.

I was expecting a lot more from my brother in law, Admittedly I know nothing about Turkey chicks, But after some internet research I still can't understand why OH why did he not put a bit more effort into raising them up? Found this Turkey chick website very promising,I understand they are fully grown and take a lot of care and maintenance, but it would have been nice to see them grow and then let out for breeding.

    Sick on the head .
God must have a sense of humor having created Eve. He is probably laughing his head off.

Seriously though. Good for you for taking care of these baby chicks , Giving them a chance to grow Up.
I bet they would be delicious when they do
