We had snakes in our pond frequently, and one day I ran into one on the bank and the sucker chased me a good 50 meters. A farmer came over to see what all the girlish squealing I was doing was about, and the snake chased him too. From what I could gather, it was a red keel back which is quite poisonous. The farmer kept shaking his head to stay away from it. Usually they would catch any snake and take it home for supper. Be careful with those things!

We have several near the house and leave them be as they are great at rodent control.

I had the same experience a few moths ago, posted about it in the 'whats in your garden' thread, I got it out with a net and chucked it as far as i could, without getting bit, next day it was back in the same spot in the tank, so i tried to uh hem it out only for it swim across the catfish pond and avoid 2 big snaps into the bamboo, was about 3 foot long and the same as the one in first pic, I clear out fallen leaves from the bottom of the tank as i see them or on feeding This feller was right at my standing spot, and is the only reason I saw it as my arm was half way out of the tank with a handful of leaves.

I feel for you, had the same experience a week ago again,
A few weeks after my water snake incident I decided to change my filtration system ,
The small canister filter I had was useless, and decided to build a wet and dry system.
I did not take pictures of the new system that is working very well yet, but below is part of the offending system I am talking about.
    Snakes in my goldfish pond.-bio-balls-jpg
So I started to empty the water with a small pot , and startled I see a snake pop his head up. same size and type as the pervious time.
I almost threw the pot across the yard LOL
So I got the guy with my fish catching net, on which I have a very long handle . that I extended with a bamboo stick. LOL
and walked all the way to the end of our soi to release him at an empty field.
Then I came back and proceeded to empty the tank. Good thing that I used the fish net to take out the bio balls, because
as I was getting to the bottom there was another small snake .
Seems like they were living in the bioball tank and when hungry they would go in my pond and feed. (I never saw them do that)
So the new filter is a sealed job consisting of a big blue barrel filled with one third biobals in the bottom, then one third lava stone, a layer of clay beads , and two inch of that plastic filtering material on top. A spray bar delivers the water on top, and gravity returns it to the pond from the bottom. I also have an overflow pipe all the way on the top of the barrel that would return the water to the pond if the pipe at the bottom got restricted and returned less water than the feed pumped in.
And the spray bar on the top had a valve allowing me to divert the feed to the bottom of the barrel to reverse the flow, for backwash purpose's.
All that it involved purchasing was the barrel some 3/4 pvc pipe , and fittings.

I got the idea from one I saw at a fish store, and it was very easy and inexpensive to make, it did not cost more than 1500 bht excluding the filtering material that was probably another 500 bht.

    It is working great.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

OK so I took some pictures of the new, snake free filter.

    No snakes in there
I will weld together a metal table and frame outside the barrel and dress it up with serra wood to hide the filter, I did not want to paint it black like the pipe so it would not stand out because I did not want it getting too hot in the sun.

Nice job on the filter..! Assume the spray-bar is push-fit, much easier when you need to clean it out.
As for the snakes suddenly getting into your pond, guess the water is now clean enough for them to enjoy a nice swim. lol

An astute observation . I should had mentioned it.
Yes indeed. No need to glue it since it has little pressure. I also did not glue the overflow pipe since it is also a low pressure return that way I can move it out of the pond when I am back washing.
I pull the spay bar out to remove the filter pad and wash it, and I take the end cups off and blow the spray bar with the garden hose , otherwise the spray holes I drilled in the bar would eventually clog

And the waters is also now clear enough for me to see them and give them a trip to the lot at the end of the street. If they keep coming back I might have to take them for a drive LOL

Snakes won't chase you. They will do whatever they can to get away from you; the most likely explanation is that you were in the way of its escape route which made it feel like it was chasing you. They just want to get away to safety as quickly as possible.

I am going to pure some of that on my four useless dogs and cat , and take them all to Laos!!
They are all busy terrorizing frogs while snakes are taking over my pond. Grrrr.
They are as useful as tits on a bull.

seriously , with all the rain we have been having lately anything I pour on the ground will wash away quickly. In fact I think the problem I am having with the water snakes might be caused by all this rain causing them to relocate . I never had any problem with them before.
As soon as the rains stop, which I hope is soon, if I still have a problem I will certainly try the vinegar suggestion , I might even try some olive oil and oregano LOL
Looking at Lazada I saw several different types of snake repellant. Has anyone tried any of them?

Rain forces/enables lots of critters to relocate.

I’m glad we moved away from that crocodile farm 20 years ago.
