    Low maintenance garden/trees and plants

My wife and i have some vacant land in Ubon that we are not going to use for the coming 10 years or more. it is a land plot from about 100 by a 100 meters. We were thinking to clear the land and build a fence around it so the cows and buffalo's dont eat or trample what we plant. We want some low maintenance trees that might need some help the first year or so but then can fend for themselves. We were thinking teakwood, coconut trees high and low ones. several lemon trees mango, langan, tamarind trees, sugar palm and traveler palm trees.

Am i missing some obvious ones? or should i not place some trees together?

    Any advise is appreciated.

Probably your choice of planting depends upon your planned use of the land after 10 years. Will you build a house there and keep all the trees you plant now, or some other plan?

Will you be living in the area and maintaining the land over the years ahead? The challenge is that as soon as you clear the land the native forest will grow quicker than your chosen trees. That is a lot of ground to clear repeatedly. My plot is maybe one third the size of your plot and it was tough to clear the first time. Then the build plan was pushed back a year and we had to clear again. Then again. We cleared it a third time when we moved in this spring and now that I live here I am maintaining only about a quarter of the area, the rest is trying to be forest again.

I'd like to buy an adjacent plot. If I do then I won't clear it, I'll leave it wild. Let the neighbours forage for mushrooms and the occasional cow graze around the edges. No fences, now that I am here I'll see it every day.

Sometimes it's good, if you don't want to have to mow the land, to allow cows etc to graze on it along side your trees. The cows etc can be tethered to keep them from damaging the trees. Plus you get free shit which you can utilize. Job done.

Before planting trees make sure you know how big they will get and space them accordingly.

No. Thais do it all the time. They just stick in any old saplings to mark their boundary and before you know it you've got tree problems wiv the neighbours.

Yeah I do need too space them out, now there is grass growing that has not been cut for 8 years. They can take the fruit that comes from the trees I have no problem with that. I was trying to keep the cows and buffaloes off the land for the first few years.

@shutree I just looked up the price for a fence, and i now think it is a good idea to forget the fence!!!! I had some advice from a local shopowner to make concrete poles on the 4 corners so the neighbours dont take to much liberty.
