Mendip if want I will take the chickens off your hands but I don't need to remind you they grow and then get sold around here if that makes me a heartless person then so be it.
If they grow and look good then they may just get kept and I would sell the older ones that currently rule the yard.
All the chickens here have a good life free ranging however it is not usually a long one.

I will have to post some pictures I took of my latest batch of babies. I am raising them cause their Mum died, Incubators do that when you switch off the power.

I think Mendip would benefit from choosing names based upon dishes like Jalfrezi, Bhuna or Madras or my favourite chickentikkamadrasaloo

^ Names like that would just take me too long when I say 'Good Morning' to each one every day.

Our sick chicken with the bad leg passed away last night. It was almost a relief because it was taking up a lot of time to take care of her. I buried her in the garden and as usual put a paving slab over her grave to stop the dogs digging her up. They have no respect for this kind of thing.

Som31 brought her four chicks out into the big wide world today. She was our last broody hen and this is Bor... Nelson's fifth and final family, for now.

Tonight there was a lot of cheeping from her chicks. New mums often seem to try and get their chicks into a hutch but the chicks can't work out how to get in. They hear the mum clucking away and go directly beneath her, under the hutch. They ain't clever enough to go back to the entrance and up the ramp.

In my younger and more athletic days I used to spend time scrambling around on the ground with a torch to catch the chicks and deliver them to the mum. These days I just close the hutches off for a few days to stop the mums going inside..

It seems to work. Here was a chick hitching a lift on the new mother while she looked for somewhere to sleep for the night.

    ^ Thanks!

All the chicks survived their first night out in the open and it was a cold and windy night last night. The mum did her job.

The chickens and dogs are way more active in this cold weather. Morning feeding time... a hive of activity.

I like the trouble you've taken to introduce some architectural style to the chickens, i'm sure they appreciate it

Just thinking of Nelson, banging that poor crippled hen.
Almost akin to your tale in Singapore with that woman with.. down syndrome weren't it?

@mendy - my mom's Blackie hen was singing her egg-laying song again this weekend, after several months of not producing eggs. We thought that she had entered menopause but I think she will still produce maybe 1 last batch of eggs. Blackie hen is weird - she sometimes crows like a cock during mornings. Apparently some hens can turn into cocks, under the right environmental pressure.

@malmomike - mendy's hens are hi-so & appreciate a bit of class in their abode.

^^^ On the other hand she went out with a bang!

Nelson seems to have even fewer morals than Yogi... I'm sometimes not sure what kind of example this is setting for my young and impressionable daughter.

Old Spirit Houses make perfect nest boxes for these hens to lay their eggs in. It can just get a bit complicated with all the rules that seem to apply to decommission them.

@mike - heh. Makes me remember that German vlogger in PH, the one who was caught & imprisoned last week. I wonder how he's finding prison life now? Heh....

There are some species of fish (forgot which) wherein the biggest/ alpha female can also turn into a male if there's no male around.

We've had hens that have kind of half crowed a bit, maybe a little bit cock... I don't what the correct term would be for this kind of thing these days. I can't seem to keep up with it all.

Accdg to this article, the female to male change can happen spontaneously in chickens, but not the other way around.

Sex-Change Chicken: Gertie the Hen Becomes Bertie the Cockerel | Live Science

In the case of my Blackie hen, when she has that cock-crowing phase, her comb & wattle become more red, and the comb looks more erect. When she's in her feminine phase, the comb & wattle are a paler pink colour & the comb looks deflated.

I was hoping to keep the LCBT agenda off this thread because, to be honest, I don't understand it. But as Shutree noted, this thread is a broad church.

But to get it back on track...

I spent some time in the chicken run tonight.

This is Som21 (I think?) with her family of three chicks. She's a great mother and manages to get the chicks to follow her into a hutch. I mentioned the other day that the chicks usually go beneath the hutch, hear their mum clucking above, but can't work out how to join her.

These hutches, by the way, are modified bamboo street vendor's thingies. Perfect, and cheep!

Another 'Som' already takes her older chick up to roost every night. The good mothers take their offspring up to roost as early as possible for safety... maybe not necessary in our chicken run but you can't argue with instinct.

And not too much LCBT going on there... Nelson fulfilling his duty yet again, and he hasn't even got a passport!

^ What do you reckon he'd do if one of those hens turned into a cock?

    Carry on regardless?
We've all been there on that 'passport run' eh?

^ That's hard to answer to be honest.

Are we talking 'theoretically' or from the benefit of personal experience?
