    Distressed chilli plant.

I have a birdseye chilli plant, a few months old and has started bearing. Almost overnight it got infested by a strange sticky liquid spattered with tiny yellow specks, on both sides of all the leaves. Old lady neighbour says it will die and there's nothing that can be done.
So I sprayed it with a plant pest spray, thinking it may be aphids, bt not too sure. 4 days in to the infection and the leaves are dropping off, still green but wilted.
Anyone have any ideas what it is and what can be done?

Sounds like a fungal infection. Try a fungucide spray. If its in the roots the plant is forked. Maybe poorly draining soil has caused the problem. Dont overwater and make sure the soil drains well. A few crops of potatoes is sometimes good to help break up clay type soils.

Hmmm. Thanks. I have been watering it generously because the thing wilts in the midday sun, and the soil appears to be dry.

My grams used to boil cigarette butts in water to spray on her pepper plants.....nicotine kills the bugs without harming the plant.....she always had plenty of peppers anyway

    Excellent. Thanks.
I'm thinking aphids. With the sticky stuff all over the leaves and aphids reputation as ant's cows, it just may be those buggers. And your link mentions aphids are a common complaint.

My wife does the same...with dilute Lao khao added.

Well, actually she uses low quality tobacco...which you can buy in, I think, half kilo bags for next to nothing for the purpose.

    Same here. Grow like weeds.
I would suspect aphids as well.

My suspicion is just about confirmed: as per Prags link, the leaves, while still green, are distorting and twisting a bit before falling.

Manny, I would plant more anyway. They tend to last 2ish years, every year plant two more and keep going like that; they don't take up much loom. We grow them around trees as they tend to like a mix of full sun + some shade btu don't take up too much loom in pots.
