Ahhh. These grow on the sea shore, yes? The seeds inside the husk (much the same size as an avocado seed) can be grated or smashed up to a pulp and are a poison that kill fish. Pacific Islanders use it to get fish to float to the surface when reef gathering.

As for a name...I don't knpw and don't know what to google.

    Nearly dead trees.

I have a collection of Japanese Acers, about 20. They are very slow growing shrubs and i bought all mine as 4 inch saplings for pennies - some are now 15 years old and look like proper miniature trees, to buy the sizes i have would cost you over £1,500 for the lot.

They are all in pots and i keep a layer of bark chippings on the top to help stop them drying out. I had to go away with work recently and came back to find 4 of them with dried up leaves and all the chippings gone, the pesky Blackbirds love rooting around to find bugs.

So luckily for me they recovered after some intensive care. Today i came up with an attempt to Blackbird proof them using the thick nylon netting you can get in Thailand and pvc coated wire - you'll see the results in the pics below, these were two of the ones that dried out, new leaves and still signs of trauma - i've done all 20 and it took fookin ages today.

on a brighter note, my Pear tree i espaliered 4 years ago and which produced 4 1/2 Kg pears last year has gone mad, shame it'll be left behind when i move
