    Thailand bird photos

I have hunted and fished all my life before I came to Thailand and came to love the forests. Now I do all my hunting with a camera and try to get into the forests as often as possible. Thailand has some great forests and some wonderful birdlife with over 1000 species recorded. I would like to post photos of some of the birds I have been lucky enough to get to pose for my cameras.

If anyone else has any wild bird photos I would love to see them so please join in and post them.

Black-shouldered Kite, probably the most common bird of prey in Thailand, taken at Singburi.

Blue-winged Pita a bird of the forest floor. Taken at Hellfire Pass.

Hainan Blue Flycatcher a small bird of the forest understory that migrates north for the northern summer. Taken at Phu Kae Botanical Gardens Lop Buri.

A note on the Camera / Lens etc. used would be an interesting addition to the very good pictures.

    Do you use a Hide?

Excellent pictures Birding and I'm also interested in which camera/lenses you are using.

I bought a telephoto especially for taking photos of birds in Europe and in Thailand but I have struggled with time of late and haven't managed to go out specifically to photo birds. I prefer to set up with a tripod so that I can take medium distance shots without disturbing them too much.

Having dug a 30x18m pond back in December, it was a pleasure to see a group of swallows visit and fly circuits over our tree-house and the pond. I only had the 105mm macro at the time so this is the best I managed when one of them stopped for a pose on the fence. I think they are Barn Swallows that have migrated from Siberia but open to correction.

This was taken in August whilst out on a stroll looking for butterflies by the rice farm. My first thought tells me it is a warbler but I haven't got any reference books yet so I'd be grateful if someone can identify it.

    Hi Patrick
The only hide I have is my own and it is getting a bit wrinkled.

    No I walk around slowly.

Cameras, I use so called bridge cameras, until recently a Canon SX50HS which I could use hand held, I still have it and carry it sometimes.
I now have a Canon SX60HS which I carry on a tripod for it is to difficult to hold still at full zoom or close to it.

A couple of recent photos with the 60 and the first decent ones I have been able to get of this bird.

Male Great Slaty Woodpecker at Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary.

    And a female.

First is a barn Swallow Troy and the second looks to be a Rufescent Prinia a bird I havent seen.

A great resource for ID is: Oriental Bird Club Image Database : Welcome

Another for getting bird photos ID'ed and photos from all over the world, also butterflies: BirdForum - The Net's Largest Birding Community, Dedicated To Wild Birds

Incidentally for butterflies that are not in my little book I use:https://www.flickr.com/groups/1682186@N25/

It looks like a Prinia to me - possibly a Rufescent Prinia.

Oops. Birding beat me to it.

They dont give as good a result as a top quality camera with top lenses but for what I do and the way I do it I think they are best for me.

They are light to carry and cheap to buy for instance the 50 cost me 12k baht and the 60 15k baht while a good DSLR and long lens would set one back at least 100k baht and weigh probably over 3 kg.

Some of the places I get into are pretty rough and some might say dangerous, I have already trashed one 50 so yes they suit me with what I do.

Excellent thread Birding. Cheers. Like you I hunted waterfowl and upland game birds my entire life. Nice to see pictures now. Love the Woodpecker and the Kite. Seen both a couple of times. The woodpeckers are LOUD when doing their thing. Got a headache just listening.

I plan on doing a thread at some point on insects and reptiles. I have seen some quite intriguing ones in my jungle hikes up North. I have a Canon Rebel T5 with 2 lenses 18-55mm and 75 -300mm. I am have never owned a good camera, always cheapos and usually take with phone.

Black bird with electric blue points on it. I've been seeing this bird for a while, but can not work out what it is. Any idea?

Good one Charlieboy. You are lucky to have a garden that birds visit, I have to go away from home to see anything.

Todays contribution two small birds from Chong Yen, Mae Wong National park both taken with the SX50HS.
