^ I also saw a swarm of lemon emigrants yesterday morning when I was at the farm. They are usually abundant at this time of year but, like you, I haven't seen as many before. The pond has groups of emigrants and lime butterflies, maybe 20-30 butterflies in each group. There are also far more yellow pansies around than usual but i haven't seen any blue pansies yet.

Another picture of the Oleander hawk moth (I learnt above). This was on a window sill just near a Jasmine bush. I've found the moth's caterpillars on the Jasmine before and yes, the leaves nearby had been completely stripped.

Spotted this critter from inside the bedroom so the top photo is the underside seen through the glass window. Then went outside and got a topside photo while it was on the side of the house.

It was a great weekend for butterflies. I managed to snap quite a few. Here's one of them, a Painted Jezebel.

Have to say, I haven't seen a Jezebel in NE Thailand yet so good find Nev. I saw a few in Bangkok but never with camera in hand.

Rescued this guy from being trampled by the dogs today.

Excellent camouflage on what passes for our lawn...

It's very hot and dry up here in Sakon Nakhon at the moment. I spotted this in the garden the other day and I don't think I've posted a photo before...

I spent a while trying to get a shot of the wings, which are a lovely vivid blue, but I simply wasn't quick enough whenever it took flight.

Last year we planted a couple of rows of Jasmine shrubs, one just outside the porch and the other in front of the downstairs bedroom. Apart from the lovely scent, they attract a large number of butterflies and moths. I can take photos from the front porch now while having my breakfast coffee, which is just as well with the very hot days this last week.

Several posts of hawk moths on this thread so here is a Hummingbird Hawk-moth: Sphingidae Macroglossum stellatarum, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird_hawk-moth

    Thai Butterfly Photos-jrh_hawkmoth_1342_1-jpg

My, they fly fast and buzz around quickly. I struggled to take a picture at all, let alone in focus. I should have set up the tripod, stayed on one set of flowers and waited but there were lots of different types of butterfly I wanted to photograph as well. I might try that idea another day.

There were several Common Rose flying around and I took a few pictures, but then a much larger one came by and I was taken by surprise. The difference in size was much more than I expected and I wondered if they might be different sub species. Here are the pictures of the two:

This is one of many that I have seen over the last week or so

    Thai Butterfly Photos-common_rose_1349-jpg

and this is one that I saw today...

    Thai Butterfly Photos-common_rose_1370-jpg

I checked and there are several subspecies, two of which are found in Thailand:

Pachliopta Aristilochiae asteris and Pachliopta Aristilochiae goniopeltis.

I can't find any identification checklists between the two. I left my main reference in Germany, which was pretty dumb...

    ^^ Good photos, Troy.

Last week I saw a most beautiful butterfly, although it could have been a moth or other such insect. I have never seen one like it before. When it was flying it looked quite plain, a bit like a psyche butterfly and a similar size, but when it landed on my water jasmine plants and closed its wings it was quite wonderful. The wings were long and thin and almost rectangular in shape but the colouring was what struck me. It was like white icing on a cake covered in muliti-coloured hundreds and thousands. I ran indoors to get my camera but by the time I returned to the plants, it had gone. Hopefully it will return one day. Any idea what it might have been, Troy?

^ It sounds like it could have been one of the leopard moths but I think they are smaller than you describe.

This site might have a photo of the moth you saw...

I've done a bit of googling and the closest I have come to finding what I saw is a crimson speckled footman (Utetheisa pulchella). Not exactly the same but similar. Mine had a bigger range of colours than the usual red/pink and black/grey - closer to the third photo below.

I've just looked though the link you posted, Troy, and it has two similar looking moths, but again, the one I saw had more colours.

^ very pretty Nev. I'm having a hunt around my garden to see if I can find anything similar. No luck so far.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in collecting a few months for photographing a common way is to set up a white sheet in the garden and shine a torch to backlight it. You'll probably attract loads of bugs here.

The Jasmine shrubs were Mrs Troy's idea rather than mine. I wasn't too happy digging the trenches in the heat last year, but the effort has certainly been worth it. This morning the bushes were so full of medium and large sized butterflies it was difficult to identify them as they flew around. Having said that, the great bonus is that it is easier to spot the mimics and the different species of tigers and crows. The variations in size, pattern and colour are more obvious when the species are together or at least on the same species of plant.

Back on the first of this thread I mentioned the danaid eggfly and how the female looks completely different as it mimics the Plain tiger. I managed to photograph both this morning on the Jasmine. It's the first time I have managed to spot the danaid female and have the camera at hand to confirm. It's just a pity that the lighting was so different when I took the pictures.

First a male Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus), which is very common in our garden but not so much on the Jasmine.

    Danaus chrysippus - Wikipedia

    Thai Butterfly Photos-plain_tiger_1491_01-jpg

and this is the female Danaid eggfly (Hypolimnas misippus)

    Hypolimnas misippus - Wikipedia

    Thai Butterfly Photos-danaid_1524_1-jpg

Quite a good mimic, although when seen side by side it is easy to spot the differences.

Hi, I'd like to ask you something. You might know it. I caught this guy in my yard. He looks like a bumblebee but his body is brown with stripes. He seems to have hair all over and he flew very fast

Apologies, I missed your post earlier

Not very easy to tell what it is from the photo. There are some large carpenter bees (Apidae genus Xylocopa) and a lot of different hawkmoths (family Sphingidae). You could have a look on the link I gave Nev earlier, but I don't think there are many photos of the insects in flight.

As I said in the OP, I'm only an amateur at this. There are so many different species of insect, and the reference books run into many volumes, that I find it difficult to identify butterflies, let alone other insects.

Thank you. In my area there are those butterflies like in yours. I also took a lot of photos. One of them, black with blue spots, those spots are normally white but when touched by sunlight they will turn into blue. Fascinating.
