Not very easy to tell what it is from the photo. There are some large carpenter bees (Apidae genus Xylocopa) and a lot of different hawkmoths (family Sphingidae). You could have a look on the link I gave Nev earlier, but I don't think there are many photos of the insects in flight.
As I said in the OP, I'm only an amateur at this. There are so many different species of insect, and the reference books run into many volumes, that I find it difficult to identify butterflies, let alone other insects.
