Stillborn pigs from mosquito spraying

My pig just gave birth. We had a vet there putting his hand elbow deep inside and pulling most of them out. She had 11 piglets, 7 died and only 4 survived. He said "this one is retarded", and that pig was shivering all the time and wouldn't drink much milk. It died a day later. So from 11 piglets I have 3 that aren't dead.

The vet said they were so much stillborns because the government spraying for mosquitos in the area, also the pig pen is near a ditch where the locals burn their garbage, and he said it's also because of the smoke.

I've never seen anyone spray for mosquitos in Isaan, is this a possible cause or not? I think it's more likely something genetic but not an expert. It was very depressing to feed that pig twice a day for 4 months, pay money for the inception, pay for vet, just to have 3 pigs. Waste of time and money.

The dead pigs looked strong and healthy, they just weren't breathing. Is there a more likely cause?

The mosquito spray they use is agricultural diesel. It does not kill mosquitoes directly. All it does is form a thin layer of diesel on the water surface where mosquito larvae live. The mosquito larvae cannot then breath because of the diesel and drown.
I cannot see that process causing problems with your pigs.

long john, its the time of year for mummified/still born ect.... it is mainly due to the heat, and or that the mum pig was not strong enough/happy (heat stress) to bring the pigs out healthy and alive.
example this month in the wifes farm she had 42 births from the 01-31 may, lost or had problems with just under 20% of mums/births. this from gilts through to very late parity 10 and above, the pigs live in a evap farm so is as cool as it could be for them....... we have blood tests every month also.... blood always ok.
the "vet" pulled most out because they have been dead inside, hence not moving and the mum gets tired.....
what parity is said pig? if she has birthed before and been good just chalk this one up as a learning curve, the next birth should be good, the pigs that we have problems like this we keep as long as the mum looks healthy ect... is up eat ect.... and they dont have this problem again.
when your pig was AI or mated it was in the 2nd week of feb, it was already hot then and just the beginning of the real heat/humidity - this is why i would put it down to heat stress. did she birth early, say day 112-113?
just make sure that the ones that are alive keep that way. if they are nursing hard enough the milk should keep flowing (good to check milk flow) dont over feed the mum as she only has the 3 piglets to extract the milk, if they can not drink all the milk she produces there is a good chance that the teats will shut down due to blockages........ all being well you should have some very good piglets in 20 days or so..... try and look at the positives you still have the mum pig and 3 piglets, could always be worst............

It was her first litter. He said some were mummified and if he had been their earlier he could have maybe saved more. They weren't early, I think 180 days or whatever it's supposed to be. Would it help to have a fan running this time of year then? I'm not sure I can justify putting a fan on the pig because the profit is so low already.

115 day is the normal length of the pregnancy.
no dont bother with the fan.... just make sure there is plenty of clean drinking water and do not over feed.
try and make the environment the pig live in the best you can..... the main problem here is the heat. If people burn rubbish near where the pig live try and move them to a better place....

Its easier to remember 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days as far as sow pregnancy is concerned.

High piggery roofing is good for better air circulation and ensures proper ventilation. Its good for managing and avoiding heat stress. Cleaning/spraying the sows with water twice on a v hot day is recommended.

Keep an eye on the food intake of your sows when they are preggers. You do not want to underfeed or overfeed them. Your objective in feeding gestating sows is to achieve an appropriate, targeted sow weight gain during gestation that will allow optimum litter development and prepare them for lactation.

Some causes of mummified births are bacterial, while some are purely genetics/inherited, especially when it comes to purebreds.

Sometimes, during farrowing.... it helps to let the sows walk around the pen with your close supervision to help with fast labor.
